Guy Berger Posted February 28, 2017 Report Posted February 28, 2017 I've been thinking of picking some of these up... interested in folks' opinions. Ravi Coltrane, Spirit Fiction Rudresh Mahanthappa & Bunky Green, Apex Chris Potter, The Sirens Chris Potter, Imaginary Cities Quote
jlhoots Posted February 28, 2017 Report Posted February 28, 2017 The only one I have is Apex. It's very good. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted February 28, 2017 Report Posted February 28, 2017 I don't know the Ravi disc specifically, but I love his tone, and I see it also has Ralph Alessi (trumpet) on some tracks, which is usually a big plus. FWIW. Quote

FWIW. I saw him in Chicago last fall with Orrin Evans. Liked him better on soprano than tenor. Of course that was live versus the CD. Thought he was really, really good on soprano (and nothing like his dad). 4 hours ago, Guy Berger said: I've been thinking of picking some of these up... interested in folks' opinions. Chris Potter, The Sirens Chris Potter, Imaginary Cities Note that allmusic.com puts Cities higher, both from the critic and the users - and a fairly high number of user ratings for both. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted February 28, 2017 Report Posted February 28, 2017 I haven't heard "Spirit Fiction" in quite awhile, but it's very good, cerebral. Ravi is excellent on Jack DeJohnette's "In Movement". Quote
LWayne Posted March 1, 2017 Report Posted March 1, 2017 I would also rate "Cities" by Chris Potter much higher than "Sirens", but I enjoy both. I have all the CDs that you mention. "Apex" is probably the best due to my admiration for Bunky Green. "Science Friction" has not really made much of an impression on me. LWayne Quote
