mikeweil Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 We've had sexiest and silliest album covers etc., but when I came across this one I got the idea of posting fine art with a jazz topic (please specify artist's name and title). TedR Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 That is your work Chris?! That is just excellent. Have you done others? Are you still painting/drawing? Quote
Christiern Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 Thank you, Ted. I still do graphics, but now it's on a Macintosh. I haven't painted in many years. Here's a very bad photo I just took of an old drawing I did. I had thrown it away but one of my neighbors, Oscar Pettiford, Jr. retrieved it (and another) without my knowledge, made frames for them, and gave them to me. Quote
couw Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 the heart on the "I" is ... cute! thanks for posting these Chris. I rather like the sax player you did. Did you habe anyone particular in mind while doing that one? Quote
Joe Christmas Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 some of Jacob Lawrence's paintings contained references to jazz, but his work has also been the inspiration for lots of music. Bob Rusch's daughter also cites Lawrence as a primary influence for her work on all of the CIMP covers. Quote
mikeweil Posted March 2, 2004 Author Report Posted March 2, 2004 From the site couw linked above, by drummer George Wettling! Quote
Free For All Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 I don't have any examples to post, but what about Romare Bearden (sp.?)? Also, I can't remember his name, but I think his work was on the cover of the Thad and Mel LP Consummation, and I've seen his stuff other places too. What was his name? I used to know, dammit. Quote

couw Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 a bit similar, at least in the impression it makes on me, is the work of David Stone Martin. Click here for a gallery of his cover artwerk. Quote

mikeweil Posted March 2, 2004 Author Report Posted March 2, 2004 (edited) It's a dance painting (Dancing Baden-Baden 1923), but I wanted some Max Beckmann here. You guess what the music they danced to sounded like in the roaring twenties! Edited March 2, 2004 by mikeweil Quote
