clifford_thornton Posted February 24, 2017 Report Posted February 24, 2017 Rest in peace to the great and highly individual pianist, who spent the last 44 years in Denmark: http://www.jazzpromoservices.com/jazz-news/horace-parlan-r-i-p/ Quote
sidewinder Posted February 24, 2017 Report Posted February 24, 2017 I am sorry to hear this, he was always a favourite. Will be sure to play some of his music this weekend. BBC radio broadcast a short documentary about him last year, recorded largely in conversation at his care home. He came across with great dignity. RIP. Quote
Cyril Posted February 24, 2017 Report Posted February 24, 2017 OMG. I'm glad he died peacefully in his sleep. Rest in peace, Horace Parlan. Thanks for the music..... Quote
JSngry Posted February 24, 2017 Report Posted February 24, 2017 RIP & much love. He's been one of those people who I started off really liking only to find that the more I listened to him, the more I heard. It so often works the other way around, but not for this guy. Depth of character! Quote
Peter Friedman Posted February 24, 2017 Report Posted February 24, 2017 Horace Parlan has been in very poor health for some time. But it is still very sad news to hear of his death. I have a wonderful DVD about him at home, but as I am out of town cannot come up with the title. Loved his work with Mingus and his Blue Note albums as both leader and sideman. The series of albums he made for Steeplechase are delightful and highly recommended to those unfamiliar with them. As was true also of pianist Carl Perkins, Parlan demonstrated the ability to be a very fine jazz pianist even though he had a physical disability effecting his hand. R.I.P. Quote
mjzee Posted February 24, 2017 Report Posted February 24, 2017 Sad to hear. I'll play his Mosaic box tonight in his honor. RIP. Quote
HutchFan Posted February 24, 2017 Report Posted February 24, 2017 Very sad news. R.I.P. So many great ones are passing! Quote
CJ Shearn Posted February 24, 2017 Report Posted February 24, 2017 RIP, very sad news. Great playing with the Turrentine's as well. Quote
Mark Stryker Posted February 24, 2017 Report Posted February 24, 2017 (edited) Everyone knows that he only had limited use of his right hand because of childhood polio, right? (Just two fingers were operative, I think.) The videos show how he actually played, which is quite amazing. Scroll to the 7:55 mark for a good demonstration. alankin Posted February 24, 2017 Report Posted February 24, 2017 Sad news. I was just looking at his Mosaic box earlier this week. I will have to play it this weekend. (There's too much of this going on!) Quote
Michael Weiss Posted February 25, 2017 Report Posted February 25, 2017 Oh fuck. What a great human being. Had a few wonderful phone conversations just over the last several months. Damn. Love watching Dizzy and Clifford over his shoulder. Quote
BFrank Posted February 25, 2017 Report Posted February 25, 2017 I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't know he was still alive. RIP, Mr. Parlan! Quote
jeffcrom Posted February 25, 2017 Report Posted February 25, 2017 I became aware of Mr. Parlan's work back in the 1970s, when, as a teenager, I heard him on a Mingus album I checked out from my small-town public library. Over the years, I admired his work on his own albums, and as a sideman. RIP. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted February 25, 2017 Report Posted February 25, 2017 so he really never came back for US dates? if he did it wold of gone down big here. RIP Quote
JohnS Posted February 25, 2017 Report Posted February 25, 2017 Very sad news. A legacy of an important body of work Quote
Ken Dryden Posted February 25, 2017 Report Posted February 25, 2017 I just reviewed a CD by a band interpreting his work. Parlan had lost his wife a few years ago and was living in a nursing home, but he generously gave his remaining royalties to help fund the recording. He left an impressive legacy. Quote
king ubu Posted February 25, 2017 Report Posted February 25, 2017 Very sad news. Heard him (with Turrentine and Mingus) very early on when I started exploring jazz, and always enjoyed his playing a lot. Much love! Quote
brownie Posted February 25, 2017 Report Posted February 25, 2017 Always impressed by his musicianship and even more impressed by the courage he showed throughout his life. R.I.P. Quote
paul secor Posted February 25, 2017 Report Posted February 25, 2017 A favorite since I first heard him with Mingus to his solo sessions and the duos with Archie Shepp on Steeplechase. Many thanks to Morganized for posting the video. Horace Parlan comes across as a genuinely nice man. And thanks to brownie for pointing out that he did lead a courageous life. Thank you for everything you gave, Mr. Parlan Quote
