Hardbopjazz Posted February 21, 2017 Report Posted February 21, 2017 I am excited about this new release coming out on February 24, 2017. I read once that Todd Barkan recorded just about every set that was performed at the Keystone Korner. What gems lie in some vault waiting to be released? I just pre-ordered this one. I really enjoy Cedar's playing and compositions. Disc: 1 1. Jacob's Ladder (Live) 2. For All We Know (Live) 3. Charmed Circle (Live) 4. Precious Mountian (Live) 5. Another Star (Live) 6. I Didn't Know What Time it Was (Live) 7. March of the Fishman (Live) Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted February 21, 2017 Author Report Posted February 21, 2017 (edited) It is with a band from the review I read, "These live recordings capture Cedar and a hand-picked group of colleagues live in concert at the famed San Francisco jazz club, the Keystone Korner" Edited February 21, 2017 by Hardbopjazz Quote
Dan Gould Posted February 21, 2017 Report Posted February 21, 2017 And I'd like to see more about the groups before I commit. Too much Bob Berg might keep me from this one but some Ralph Moore would be nice. <ducks head> Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted February 21, 2017 Author Report Posted February 21, 2017 I'll let you know who is in the band when my copy arrives. Quote
BFrank Posted February 21, 2017 Report Posted February 21, 2017 I just sent a question about personnel and date to Todd Barkan on FB. Will let you know if he responds. Quote
mjzee Posted February 21, 2017 Report Posted February 21, 2017 Per the Proper Music website: Personnel: Cedar Walton (piano & electric piano), Steve Turre (trombone), Manny Boyd (tenor saxophone), Tony Dumas (bass), Ralph Penland (drums). No recording date listed. See: http://www.propermusic.com/product-details/Cedar-Walton-Charmed-Circle-Live-at-the-Keystone-Korner-245542 Quote
David Posted February 27, 2017 Report Posted February 27, 2017 Bought this on iTunes. Sound is very good on my system. I'd be surprised if this was an audience recording. Cedar is in fine form, as is Steve Turre. I haven't heard of Manny Boyd before, and he didn't stand out one way or other. Cedar spends a fair amount of time on the electric piano. I like what he does on that, so it is not an issue to me. All in all, recommended for Cedar fans and anyone who likes advanced but inside hard bop. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted February 28, 2017 Report Posted February 28, 2017 I am not a fan of electric piano , with a very few exceptions. Manny Boyd does not do much for me. So am a bit disappointed as I am a big time Cedar Walton fan. Have almost all his recordings, but will pass on this one. Quote
