scottb Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 I've been eating POPTARTS (no off brand substitute toaster pastries excepted) since I was a kid. Now that I have kids of my own I'm back to eating them a couple times a week for breakfast. My favorite is Brown Sugar and Cinnamon. The last two boxes we've eaten have tasted different. I'm talking about a MAJOR recipe change in the cinnamon filling. At first I wrote it off as a bad batch but now the second box confirms my worst fears. This is worse than the new Coke fiasco! Has any one else noticed any variances in other varieties of POPTARTS? Quote
vibes Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 No variance, thank god. I buy these out of the vending machine at work at least once a week, and they kick ass. $.75 for two Pop-tarts makes them the best deal in the machine. Frosted strawberry and frosted cherry are my favorites. Quote
Guest Chaney Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 I'm not a Pop-Tart eater myself -- love 'em but tend to eat the whole box so I don't indulge -- but I put your (now my) question to (online) and I'll post their response -- IF I get a response. (I'm guessing that I will.) Quote

robviti Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 (edited) I can't stand the ones with icing and sprinkles. Heck, I'm not 10 anymore. Yep, just plain ol' blueberry for me. Recently, I tried a new product: Quaker Fruit & Oatmeal Toastables toaster pastries. The pastry crust is made with real oatmeal (naturally) and thus has more taste to it than Pop Tarts. You might want to give them a try. They come in the following flavors: Iced Strawberry, Iced Apple Cinnamon and Brown Sugar, Strawberry, Apple Cinnamon and Brown Sugar, Iced Blueberry, and Cherry Cobbler (my personal favorite). scottb Posted March 2, 2004 Author Report Posted March 2, 2004 I had Cinnamon POPTARTS for breakfast this AM and you can't tell me there is no change. I may need to ship a couple TARTS to them for more in depth analysis. I can seriously barely stomach the "new" ones. Quote
ghost of miles Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 As a kid I was a big fan of the chocolate-fudge version. Quote
Chrome Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 I eat the brown sugar cinnamon ones about once a week ... I haven't noticed a change in taste so much as a change in texture ... they're "drier" to me, if that makes sense. Has anyone tried the Spongebob Poptarts yet? I got a box for my kids ... they're flavored with some bizarre pseudo-fruit substance ... "Bubbleberry" or something. Absolutely revolting. Quote
patricia Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 (edited) I'm continually amazed that people who eat Pop Tarts for breakfast, every day aren't dead. They're SNACK FOOD, at best. Holy man you guys!!!! Read the labels. What happened to real food?? As a side-thought, isn't it amazing how much totally excessive sugar our bodies can take without blowing up like a balloon?? I beg of you, don't think these snacks are food!!!! Like Ding Dongs, they're fun-foods, in ADDITION to a sensible plan. If you're on the chubby side already, they'll increase the size of your casted shadow. ONCE a week, maximum, PLEASE!!!! Since we're on the subject of changes in familiar food, why are almost all packaged foods, including candy bars, substantually smaller?? There is a chocolate-cherry-nut beauty, called "Cherry Blossom" which used to be a collossal chocolate-box-shaped confection, in a little, square box, which was loaded with chocolate, nuts and liquid and cherry filling that leaked out on one's lap that is now HALF it's original size and more expensive!!!! SACRILEDGE!!!! Edited March 2, 2004 by patricia Quote
scottb Posted March 2, 2004 Author Report Posted March 2, 2004 It's funny that you mention DING DONGS (AKA KING DONS) On days I don't have POPTARTS, I usally eat 3-4 DING DONGS for breakfast As for being drier in texture, that's not my experience. They actually seem moister but not in a good way more gel like which is somewhat nauseating. Quote
catesta Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 As a kid I was a big fan of the chocolate-fudge version. Those were the only ones I ever ate, and I never, ever, toasted them. Quote

ghost of miles Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 You'll be happy to know that I gave up my chocolate-fudge Poptarts many years ago, Patricia. These days I'm a yogurt-and-granola guy when it comes to breakfast, with the occasional home fries, bacon, or sausage links. Breakfast is the one meal I can't miss--I'm damned cranky if I do. Oh, and the half-pot of coffee that I wash it all down with. Quote
Chrome Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 You know, Ghost, they now have yogurt-filled Poptarts ... Quote

SACRILEDGE!!!! This has been going on for awhile. Companies will subtly change the package (or not so subtly... "NEW LOOK, same great taste!!!") and likewise cut back on the actual amount of the product without telling anyone. But of course the price is the same. Andy Rooney from 60 Minutes has been talking about this recently. Quote

JSngry Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 And...correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Toast 'Ems precede Pop Tarts in the marketplace? Pop Tarts is better, though. Quote
