Misterioso Posted February 19, 2018 Report Posted February 19, 2018 Having a Julius Hemphill evening tonight spinning the following two records: It would be interesting to know more about G.A. Baxter whose music classes at I.M. Terrell High School in Fort Worth were attended (as is well known) by Ornette Coleman, John Carter, Dewey Redman and Julius Hemphill, among others. I wonder to what extent Mr Baxter was responsible for the jazz interests of his students. I also would like to know more about the relationship between John Carter and Julius Hemphill. It seems Carter taught clarinet to Hemphill (who was about ten years younger) but I wonder how extensive and formal these lessons were. Were these regular and paid lessons or just some informal and irregular meetings among students with similar interests? Does anyone here know more? Anyway, here's to you Mr Baxter. Quote
kh1958 Posted February 19, 2018 Report Posted February 19, 2018 Other I.M. Terrell graduates were Charles Moffett Sr., William Prince Lasha, and Ronald Shannon Jackson. I once sat at a table at a concert with Charles Moffett's brother and naively asked him why all the jazz greats from Fort Worth were from the same high school, the answer being that there was only one black high school in Fort Worth at the time.
