Soul Stream Posted March 6, 2003 Report Posted March 6, 2003 Hey, since J.O.S got his own corner....got to see my man Patton on the board! Rule number one at John Patton Corner... 1. Get Lou Donaldons' "The Natural Soul." Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 After that, grab some Boogaloo and then comes... UNDERSTANDING!!! B) Quote
vibes Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 Let 'em Roll! Has been and probably always will be my favorite Patton album. Great playing, lots of fun! Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 Ah, Soul Stream, it seems you love Big John's music as much as I do. I happen to like some of his lesser known stuff like "That Certain Feeling" and "Memphis to NY Spirit." Patton and Blood Ulmer were made for each other. And Grant Green too! Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 Anyone here have that obscure Nilva label date that Patton is on with Grachan Moncur III? I've been looking for that one forever. The name escapes me at the moment. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 OoooooOOooOO yeah baby! Burn me one! Let's see what I can trade... I have that Shirley Scott record on Strata East that's bad as all getout... I also have a sweet Billy Preston record where he's playing organ and piano and doing all gospel tunes. Amazing organ work on that one. I've got lots of vinyl. Ask me about something... Oo, just remembered one. Gene Ludwig on Mainstream. With Jerry Byrd on guitar. Bad shit! Quote
Chimpy Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 1. Get Lou Donaldons' "The Natural Soul." I just got Natural Soul last week, and damn is this a great cd. any John Patton with Grant green is smokin' in my book. Right now, my favorite JP is Along Came John. this ones gets a lot of play with me, usually on repeat. PS Love the new forum. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 Is there a discography of Patton anywhere? If not we should compile one! Quote
mailman Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 I've got the Nilva date on lp purchased when first released. Patton and Moncur are great. Quote
Soul Stream Posted March 7, 2003 Author Report Posted March 7, 2003 I've actually got a Patton discography. I'll post it when I dig it up and have a few minutes.... Quote
Noj Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 The only Patton I have at this point is Accent On The Blues. This will be a very useful thread for me. Quote
RDK Posted March 7, 2003 Report Posted March 7, 2003 Okay, you talked me into it. I'm closing my office door and turning up "Memphis to New York Spirit." B) Quote
scottb Posted March 9, 2003 Report Posted March 9, 2003 I would like to take this opportunity to repent. On previous BB (I forget where ) I once called ACCENT ON THE BLUES " a stinker." I had sampled it in a store and was less than impressed. You have to admit that the band is not too tight on the head of the opening track. Which is about all I sampled. Later, however, even on that song, things heat up and the groove takes over and well... you've heard the disc. Anyway, I publicly renounce my previous statement and beg your forgiveness for my slander against this disc. My favorite Patton (and I may stand alone) is BLUE JOHN. It was my first John Patton and my first exposure to Braith. Tommy T has some great moments on this one too. Maybe I'll tire of the Braith someday but for now this one's my pick. I'm realy looking forward to THAT CERTAIN FEELING which I've never heard. Quote
Bill Fenohr Posted March 10, 2003 Report Posted March 10, 2003 Another thumbs up for Soul Connection. The version of The Coaster is great. Besides Big John and Grachan, Melvin Sparks is playing some nice stuff. Does anyone know anything about Grant Reed the tenor player on this date? He is new to me. Quote
David Williams Posted March 10, 2003 Report Posted March 10, 2003 (edited) The funny thing about John Patton is everyone seems to have a different favourite... or is it just my imagination. (Hello Dan! That feature that tells you who else is viewing a thread is creeping me out! Whoa - now you've gone!) Edited March 10, 2003 by David Williams Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted March 10, 2003 Report Posted March 10, 2003 I honestly still haven't been turned on listening to Memphis to New York spirit. I'm sure it'll grab me one day and I'll say "Whoa! Why didn't I hear this before?" I keep trying. That's what happened with Understanding. I think I went in with preconceptions of what it was going to sound like and it took awhile for those preconceptions to fall away and to just listen to the music for what it is. Quote
Big Al Posted March 10, 2003 Report Posted March 10, 2003 Big John Patton, Grant Green, & Ben Dixon: the Holy Trinity of Greeeaze!!!! I really dig OH BABY!!! Quote
Soul Stream Posted March 10, 2003 Author Report Posted March 10, 2003 I may have mentioned this back on the old BNBB, but....OH, BABY! was one of Big John's 2 favorites of his own records. The other being ALONG CAME JOHN. For me, OH BABY and THE WAY I FEEL represent a very nice departure from the usual organ session. Man, those HORNS! Quote
Templejazz Posted August 27, 2003 Report Posted August 27, 2003 (edited) Been listening to more of Big John lately. Are his two DIW releases recommended? A store near me has them as imports and if they are anything like his BN Rare Groove releases, I might pull the trigger for one or both of them. Edited August 27, 2003 by Templejazz Quote
Soul Stream Posted August 27, 2003 Author Report Posted August 27, 2003 Yes, those are two very worthy sessions that show what Patton was all about in his last years. Great bands and some terriffic compositions, especially on "This One's For JA." "Minor Swing" is basically mined from his old Blue Notes as far as songs go...."The Way I Feel" "Along Came John" "Minor Swing", ect....but still a great CD!!! By all means pick these up!!! Quote
DrJ Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 You WOULD have to say that, Soul Stream...I just passed on MINOR SWING at a used store yesterday...unfortunately one about 40 miles from home, I was passing through coming back from (to coin a Carmell Jones kind of phrase) business meetin'. Damn. Quote
Soul Stream Posted August 28, 2003 Author Report Posted August 28, 2003 You WOULD have to say that, Soul Stream...I just passed on MINOR SWING at a used store yesterday...unfortunately one about 40 miles from home, I was passing through coming back from (to coin a Carmell Jones kind of phrase) business meetin'. Damn. Sorry Dr. J.!!!! Bad timing I guess. However, don't feel too bad. Minor Swing is the least favorite of the two. But it is still a good one. You might have to make a "business" trip soon!!!! Free For All Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 This is another one that I've seen around and wondered about (Minor Swing). How does John Zorn work out on this one? That's what has me wondering. I like a lot of Zorn's sides (like Big Gundown) but have had difficulty imagining him w/an organ band. Quote
JSngry Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 Zorn can play. His Zorn-ness can't help but come through, which is the way it should be, but the cat is not out of place in this setting AT ALL. Quote
