jeffcrom Posted November 15, 2016 Report Posted November 15, 2016 One of the few musical artists in any genre whose entire recorded output can be found on my shelves - that's how much he meant to me. RIP. Quote
duaneiac Posted November 15, 2016 Report Posted November 15, 2016 So, I'm confused. The link to the article about the hoax notice of his passing said the claim was that he had passed on Nov. 13. The JazzTimes article says he passed on Nov. 15. So is the JazzTimes article correct? Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted November 15, 2016 Report Posted November 15, 2016 (edited) I did see him live once and was blown away by his talent. So if he is dead, RIP Mose. Edited November 16, 2016 by Hardbopjazz Quote
JSngry Posted November 15, 2016 Report Posted November 15, 2016 Perhaps the hoax is a hoax? http://www.clarionledger.com/story/magnolia/2016/11/15/pianist-mose-allison-dies-age-89/93921696/ http://hottytoddy.com/2016/11/15/mose-allison-dies-age-89/ No matter, either way - Hello There, Universe. duaneiac Posted November 15, 2016 Report Posted November 15, 2016 (edited) His website now confirms that Mose Allison passed away today. Another musical icon gone. I saw him perform a couple of times. With all the attention given to his songwriting and singing, people may overlook that he was also a really fine pianist. His version of "You Are My Sunshine" really brought home to me just how profoundly sad that song is. (Why do we teach little tykes to sing such a depressing song?) May he Rest In Peace. clifford_thornton Posted November 15, 2016 Report Posted November 15, 2016 anything with deathhoax.html is usually not worth citing. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted November 15, 2016 Report Posted November 15, 2016 Was (Mose Allison) When I become was and we become were Will there be any sign or a trace of th' lovely contour of your face And will there be someone around With essentially my kinda sound When am turns to was and now is back when Will someone have moments like this Moments of unspoken bliss And will there be heroes and saints Or just a dark new age of complaints When I become was and we become were Will there be any Susans and Ralphs Lookin' at old photographs And wondering aloud to a friend Quote

mikeweil Posted November 15, 2016 Report Posted November 15, 2016 R.I.P. - another original voice has moved on .... Quote
kh1958 Posted November 15, 2016 Report Posted November 15, 2016 That is too sad. He's been a favorite ever since seeing him perform in a folk club in Austin in 1983. I recollect seeing him another three times during the 1980s in Dallas, Fort Worth, and New Orleans. Quote
Cyril Posted November 15, 2016 Report Posted November 15, 2016 That's very sad news, R.I.P. Mose. Quote
kinuta Posted November 15, 2016 Report Posted November 15, 2016 (edited) He was one of the greats. I've loved him since first hearing him in the mid sixties. At least he had a long productive life, making excellent music right to the end. RIP Mose. Edited November 15, 2016 by kinuta Quote
GA Russell Posted November 15, 2016 Report Posted November 15, 2016 Mose was a favorite of mine. The first album of his that I heard was the Atlantic "Best of" issued in the fall of '69. I was hooked immediately. My favorite album of his was I've Been Doing Some Thinking. Like Duane, his You Are My Sunshine was a favorite of mine. RIP. Quote

T.D. Posted November 16, 2016 Report Posted November 16, 2016 Damn. RIP. Mose was a favorite because of his lyrics before I became a jazz enthusiast. I once saw him live at the now-defunct Bradley's in NYC (iirc). Quote
BillF Posted November 16, 2016 Report Posted November 16, 2016 Saw him at Ronnie Scott's in the 60s. Best of all I like his piano work with Al & Zoot and Getz. Quote
Clunky Posted November 16, 2016 Report Posted November 16, 2016 RIP. Once I'd got my ears around his delivery I loved his music. Saw him once at a small hotel basement bar in Edinburgh. I'd actually gone along to see Sweets Edison who was taken ill thereby missing the gig . 7th son !! Quote
brownie Posted November 16, 2016 Report Posted November 16, 2016 Was a fan minutes after listening to 'Back Country Suite' when it was released back in 1958. Was lucky to attend à surprise visit to the Paris Blue Note club several months later. He had a Rolls Royce car parked outside the club! Kept up and enjoyed most of his recording since. Quote
LarryCurleyMoe Posted November 16, 2016 Report Posted November 16, 2016 Sad news for sure. Mose was very hip. Quote
