JSngry Posted October 29, 2016 Report Posted October 29, 2016 Warner Brothers, 1992 (that's almost a quarter-century ago for those of you with calendars). A nicely varied program with Kenny Kirkland, Charnet Moffett, & Brian Blade as constants, and some relevant guest appearances by Joe Henderson, Don Alias, Donald Brown, & Ricky Wellman. Samples: Myself, I think this is the most fully balanced record that Kenny Garrett has made, even now. He's not a harbinger of tomorrow, never was, but his is a distinctive, soulful voice that can speak in both "hardcore" and "populist" arenas. This record has enough of each to make it an easy listen as well as a stimulating one. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted October 29, 2016 Report Posted October 29, 2016 I've always enjoyed Kenny when I've heard him, whether live with Miles (Twice IIRC) or on the radio or whatever, but if this is trly his best album, that's sac. @nd rate hard bop revival followed by 2nd rate '70s R&B revival followed by Wayne Sharoters Left Nut...meh! Or maybe I'm having a bad day. Quote
JSngry Posted October 29, 2016 Author Report Posted October 29, 2016 Everything you say could conceivably be true! Quote
soulpope Posted October 29, 2016 Report Posted October 29, 2016 (edited) (IMO) Kenny Garrett didn't get caught in the "Young Lions" trap .... still he was - in his early leader dates - searching for a own style btw structure .... which made listening to these sometimes a sort of mixed experience - but not resultwise, he just missed some(one's) expectations .... which was not necessarily a bad thing .... JSngry Posted October 29, 2016 Author Report Posted October 29, 2016 I like that he always had his own sound & time. Quote
kh1958 Posted October 30, 2016 Report Posted October 30, 2016 I liked him with Miles Davis years ago; mostly I didn't pay attention until at the 2015 New Orleans Jazz Fest, I heard the super-cool sequence of Vieux Farka Toure followed by Cassandra Wilson followed by Kenny Garrett--his set was really fantastic. felser Posted November 17, 2016 Report Posted November 17, 2016 This is my favorite Garrett album, even like Pat Metheny on it! Boosted greatly for me in that it has some of my very favorite Trane composition which are seldom heard (Equinox, Lonnie's Lament, After the Rain, Like Sonny, Alabama). Quote
Drumolator Posted January 3, 2017 Report Posted January 3, 2017 I have six of his CD's and I like his music quite a bit. Peace and goodwill. Quote
