ghost of miles Posted October 13, 2016 Report Posted October 13, 2016 Digging into impresario Norman Granz's The Jazz Scene, a proto-box-set of six 78 records that documented the state of late-1940s modern jazz--last week's Night Lights show now up for online listening: Norman Granz's Jazz Scene Quote
Ted O'Reilly Posted October 13, 2016 Report Posted October 13, 2016 What a good idea for a show! I assume your source material comes from the 1994 facsimile CD issue, with a second CD of added tracks... I have an original (#4583) from late in the numbered run of 5000. It looks like it's a real Granz signature -- likely would be machine-done these days. Quote
ArtSalt Posted October 14, 2016 Report Posted October 14, 2016 Thanks for that, really enjoyed it. Quote
ghost of miles Posted October 14, 2016 Author Report Posted October 14, 2016 Hey, glad you guys enjoyed it... and Ted, yes, I used the 1994 expanded reissue. But recently a friend gave me her deceased husband's copy of the original set, albeit without a cover, but with booklet and 78s amazingly intact (and the autographed frontpiece from Granz as well). Ah, yes, 12 inch vinyl 78s pretty much indestructible with average care...and did you get the postcard-size insert? Dear Friend: We would greatly appreciate your letting us know what you think of THE JAZZ SCENE. Inasmuch as we hope to put out new editions in the future (perhaps one every five years if the musical picture requires) we would welcome all constructive criticism. Pleas send your comments to us at: JAZZ AT THE PHILHARMONIC 522 Fifth Avenue -- Room 303 New York 18, N.Y. Thanks very much. Norman Granz Producer, THE JAZZ SCENE Quote
sidewinder Posted October 15, 2016 Report Posted October 15, 2016 Yet another opportunity for me to boot myself in the *ss for not picking up that £10 copy in Mole Jazz - even though the dust and crud on it would rigger asthma at 1000 yards. Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 6, 2018 Author Report Posted August 6, 2018 We re-aired Norman Granz's Jazz Scene last week, and I'm re-posting it today in honor of his centenary. Quote
ghost of miles Posted November 29, 2021 Author Report Posted November 29, 2021 One more go-around this past week for Norman Granz’s Jazz Scene. Quote
