fasstrack Posted September 9, 2016 Report Posted September 9, 2016 Someone on FB put this up. Tom is an old friend, and I think he sounds wonderful here, really stretching out---as does everyone. I think it's Eric Ineke on drums. No clue who the bass player is: Quote
njtw Posted September 9, 2016 Report Posted September 9, 2016 The bass-player is Koos Serierse and the drummer is indeed Eric Ineke. Here's another YT-video with the same trio: Quote
JSngry Posted September 9, 2016 Report Posted September 9, 2016 Little known fact - when.James Clay died, his will specified that that particular sweater be made into a Tony Williams floor tom. It was headline news here, but I'm not sure about the extent of coverage it got elsewhere. I like that drummer, btw. His shirt and Heavy's sweater combine to look like sky and sun. Quote
soulpope Posted September 9, 2016 Report Posted September 9, 2016 Actually this/the Rein DeGraaff Trio was a quality rhythm section fixture on European soil ..... Quote

Joe Posted September 9, 2016 Report Posted September 9, 2016 (edited) Thanks for this; the only film footage I've ever seen of Clay. Used to go see him at Chumley's in Deep Ellum during this era. His bands often included Lyles West (IIRC) on bass and Dwayne Clemons on trumpet. Maybe Jim remembers who his steady drummer was back then [?]. Any way, I consider myself very fortunate to have ever seen the man play at all. Edited September 9, 2016 by Joe Quote
JSngry Posted September 9, 2016 Report Posted September 9, 2016 He used Randy Drake quite a bit. Quote

JSngry Posted September 9, 2016 Report Posted September 9, 2016 Not many...scheduling conflicts, mostly. Does W.A. Richardson sound right, or had he died by then? Quote

I don't recall ever seeing W. A. on those gigs, but, damn, that was a long time ago now. I do remember seeing Shelley Carrol jam with James with one night... he showed up to play in sweatpants! Quote
JSngry Posted September 9, 2016 Report Posted September 9, 2016 Tommy Hopkins, maybe? Ted Wasser? Paul Guerro is unlikly, but not impossible. Trying to think of cats who could cut Clay's gig AND had Sundays off AND would be willing to do both at Chuley's pay scale. Shelley & Chumley were buds back in the day, like, lock the doors and pour the bar type buddies. People were younger then...bonds were more easily formed. Sweatpants, no problem. Quote

Shelley Carrol! Where is he? He was in NY maybe 15 years ago. I think we played once. He's great... Quote
kh1958 Posted September 9, 2016 Report Posted September 9, 2016 He plays in Dallas regularly; I assume he lives here. Quote
JSngry Posted September 9, 2016 Report Posted September 9, 2016 Shelley recently relocated to Houston, to be near family and take a teaching gig. He still comes up here for gigs, though. You'll want to hear his Ellington album, if you have not yet, and if you can find it. Strong stuff. Quote

When he did live here, he had been settled In Plano for many years. Me, him, and Lyles all lived within a few miles of each other. In Plano. In the words of Myron Cohen... Quote
