Here's an idea: when we post our latest downloads, let's tack on a rating for the one's we've actually heard enough to form an opinion. I suggest using one to five stars (hate it to love it), since that's the system used by emusic.

Peter Brotzmann, etc. Up and Down the Lion-Revised ****

Hamiet Bluiett Young Warrior, Old Warrior ****

Marc Copland Night Whispers ****

Ellery Eskelin Jazz Trash

I'm pretty unhappy with the way eMusic has started handling popular recordings. I was going to DL two or three Eagles songs the other night, but everything they have available is on an "album only" basis. That forces you to buy an entire release when that's not what you want. I don't know, what these guys seem to be best at is coming up with new ways to make them harder to deal with. This used to be best deal out there. At one point, I was getting 90 DL's a month for $20.00. It's now down to 50 for the same $20.00. Then it was albums that "cost" more credits that there were tunes and now this. I'm staying the course for now, but a few more tweaks like these and I'm history.

I can understand the logic in charging 12 credits for titles that have less than that -- if I download 45 minutes (for example) of music, does it really matter if that time consists of 3 tracks, or 12?

Album only on certain tracks not so much -- I fail to see how that is much different than 45-rpm "singles" that were available for purchase for less than the price of the entire album.

All of that aside, I find myself checking Amazon first before downloading _anything_ from eMusic. There has been more than a few times when Amazon was more economical.

I downloaded one of my favorite long-lost albums:

600x600.jpg

A soulful classic of R&B! Nothing but covers, so it shouldn't have been so good, but it is!!! I had it on an ultra-cheapo LP from Columbia's Harmony label, titled Ooh-Poo-Pah-Doo:

Ebay

What a great cover, too! Was it by John Van Hamersveld?
