RDK
Any 3 track reccomendations? At the end of the month again. Im lookin for avant jazz or any classical. I've been "experimenting" with long (20-30) minute tracks by William Parker, Han Bennink, Graham Collier, Joe McPhee, Frank Lowe, etc. Turned me on to some great artists that way. Also like Bang on a Can's version of Terry Riley's "In C" - a single track disc!

Late
Any 3 track reccomendations? At the end of the month again. Im lookin for avant jazz or any classical. Pick up Frank Lowe's Black Beings if you don't already have it. 3 tracks, and certainly "avant."
randyhersom
Walt Dickerson - To My Queen. Three tracks worth many times the price. Early and great Andrew Hill as sideman. Uncle Skid
After being out for awhile, I just signed up again... I can't believe how much they have added in the last year or so. I logged in (with my original email/password), just to check their current pricing -- and then logged out. Very soon after that, I got an email for "50 free downloads" if I rejoined -- I was already thinking about it, so that just made the decision even easier. Things that look interesting: Mal Waldron & Steve Lacy - At the Bimhuis 1982 Steve Swell's Nation of We - Live at the Bowery Poetry Club (4 tracks, md655321) Steve Swell / Perry Robinson - Invisible Cities Misha Mengelberg - Four In One Martial Solal - Exposition Sans Tableau Billy Bang - Vietnam: Reflections Cuong Vu - Bound Ornette Coleman - Sound Grammar (already have it on CD, but highly recommended!) Plus, lots of Duke Ellington, Paul Bley, and a whole bunch of Albert Ayler that I haven't heard yet: Bells/Prophecy, New York Eye And Ear Control, Slug's Saloon Vol. 2, Spirits Rejoice, and the Holy Ghost box set (!) Kyo
I'd report this to eMusic... they'll likely pull the bad track, and should give you credit for the one download that you were burned by. Yeah, they'll do that. If that track had indeed been defective (seems it wasn't after all), the effect would have been that it would've been taken down and stayed unavailable for ages. Example: http://www.emusic.com/album/10604/10604781.html I reported some nasty digital noise in the first track last June or so. It's still not back up! Another example: http://www.emusic.com/album/10602/10602138.html I've been waiting for the last two tracks to be put back up forever. How hard can it be to get those songs from Concord in one way or another? I already grabbed the rest of the album, so I'm not going to buy the CD just for those missing two tracks... Dave James
I'm on the 50 songs per month program, so last weekend, I downloaded Elvis 75. There are 100 songs on four "CD's", but it's a two for one deal so I was able to cover the whole thing for the 50 credits I had available. Some mighty good music here, especially the early stuff. Probably as good a beginning to end Elvis retrospective as you're likely to find.
okierambler
Sent Intakt an e-mail this week asking when more of their catalog would be available for download. Here's the reply: "thanks a lot for your interest in our downloadable albums. we will make our backcatalog available as download step by step. "we have a list of all available albums with direct links to several stores: http://www.intaktrec.ch/download-a.htm "the next 2-3 weeks there will be added some more albums. which will be: Lonelyville (Sylvie Courvoisier) The Compass, Log and Lead (Fred Firth) 11 Songs – Aus Teutschen Landen (Zentralquartett) Cutter Heads (Fred Frith & Chris Brown) DIE ENTTÄUSCHUNG (self-titled... 2007 release) First Choice - Piano Solo KKL Luzern (Irène Schweizer) Loops, Holes & Angels (Co Streiff Sextet) Quartette (Ulrich Gumpert) Solo Willisau (Anthony Braxton) Tales from 30 Unintentional Nights (Koch Schütz Studer) Urumchi (Saadet Türköz) Wisdom in Time (Wadada Leo Smith & Günter Baby Sommer) "Kind regards George Bauer, Intaktrecords-Staff" These are 2006 & 2007 releases. Amazon says they'll be available on February third. I'm especially interested in the Die Enttauschung title. I'm sure I won't be disappointed (pun intended). And I can't wait to start wading through the rest of that back catalog. I've been lusting for a copy of Alexander von Schlippenbach's epic "Monk's Casino," its not in this batch... so I may just have to shell out some bucks for a hard copy. randyhersom
The Van Morrison back catalog is pretty much a no-show. (I have almost everything on CD anyway, but I was curious.) Recently I've grabbed the new solo Marc Copland, Gary Burton Alone at Last, World Saxophone Quartet - Rhythm and Blues, Shorty Rogers - Martians Come Back and the two missing tracks from the Bill Evans Fantasy box I downloaded during my club 2K days. mjzee
Interesting sighting: Bird's Eyes, Vol. 11. The only volume thus far, but still... tho, this series really needs the info from the liner notes (dates, personnel, etc): eMusic
Free For All
What's up with all those weird jazz compilations that have appeared lately? They seem to be very randomly organized.
okierambler
What's up with all those weird jazz compilations that have appeared lately? They seem to be very randomly organized. Apparently some quasi-legal European reissue house, probably out of Italy or some other country where copyright laws are very... shall we say... lenient. Dave James
The new Hadley Caliman is nice. I DL'ed it last weekend. Any 3 track reccomendations? At the end of the month again. Im lookin for avant jazz or any classical. David S. Ware - "The Freedom Suite" It's 4 tracks, so you'll have one to look forward to when your account refreshes. This is what pisses me off about the new e-music. It used to be that an album with four songs would take four credits. Now, the four tunes from Ware's album cost you 12 credits. That's total B.S. Well, that's a label-by-label decision. Some labels switched to album pricing, while others remain track-by-track. I doubt that particular Ware album is any cheaper at iTunes. For me it meant altering the way I buy stuff there. I look for the "bargains" on stuff that I want and pass over things (for example the Ware) that I don't think is worth album pricing. I just downloaded a 30-track Red Records comp (that I believe was a 3-disc set) for only 12 credits.

Not really BS if you think about the fact that you're "buying" a whole album. Why should an artist be "penalized" for recording 4 extended tracks of excellent music? If you're going to DL in terms of "value", it might be better to consider album length instead of # of tracks.
