I need to put it on the purchase list. I bought it in an earlier edition. Okay, but nothing I listened to much. But then, I'm not a big Betty Carter fan, and others probably have a different opinion. felser Posted December 11, 2017 Report Posted December 11, 2017 It's very early, conservative work for her. Only necessary if you are a completist for her work. Nothing wrong with it, but doesn't hold a candle to her later work. 1965's "Inside Betty Carter" has the last (and to me, best) of her early style. 1969's "Finally" introduced her later, iconoclastic work. Start with the 1969-1993 albums, and work backwards. Quote

I only have three Carter albums: The Betty Carter Album (love this one), Droppin' Things, and It's Not About The Melody. I saw her live just once, after Droppin' Things came out (I think that was the most recent album; maybe not). The concert took place just a handful of days after Sarah Vaughan passed, and Betty sang an impromptu tribute to her. Marc Cary was the pianist (he seemed perfect for her), and Gregory Hutchinson was the drummer. I can't remember the bass player. It was a really good concert. I've actually never checked out her early work. Quote
jazzbo Posted December 11, 2017 Report Posted December 11, 2017 I don't have the Connoisseur release from Legacy but do have the original LP release and the earlier US cd with the different cover. Nice stuff, I like Betty, early, middle or late (and especially in the evening!) Quote
