Mark Stryker Posted August 25, 2016 Report Posted August 25, 2016 (edited) I don't think any non-musician has ever had a bigger influence on the literal sound of jazz than Rudy. When we think of "jazz," for so many of us the sound in our heads, the Platonic ideal of the art form, is a Blue Note LP engineered by RVG. Edited August 25, 2016 by Mark Stryker Quote
sidewinder Posted August 25, 2016 Report Posted August 25, 2016 Very sorry to hear this. It has been a truly dreadful couple of weeks with regard to fatalities amongst the jazz greats. I will spin a couple of his fantastic recordings tonight. RIP RVG. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted August 25, 2016 Report Posted August 25, 2016 Aw hell... I knew this was coming soon but it still sucks. Thanks for all those great recordings Rudy. Quote
Justin V Posted August 25, 2016 Report Posted August 25, 2016 I think that most jazz fans would kill to have been a fly on the wall at Rudy Van Gelder's studio. Thank you for your contributions, Mr. Van Gelder, and rest in peace. Quote
soulpope Posted August 25, 2016 Report Posted August 25, 2016 Rudy Van Gelder - thank you for the music and R.I.P .... Quote

Mark Stryker Posted August 25, 2016 Report Posted August 25, 2016 Ben Sidran's essential 1985 "Sidran on Record" radio interview with the late Rudy Van Gelder. "What we were doing was important at the time. We knew we were making good records. The music was important. It was important to the producers that I worked for at the time. It was important to me, and I felt that it was more important than the poitics of the day or anything else that that was going on. What we were doing would really have a lasting significance. I really had that impression at the time." http://bensidran.com/conversation/talking-jazz-rudy-van-gelder Quote
Cyril Posted August 25, 2016 Report Posted August 25, 2016 Rest in Peace, Rudy Van Gelder. And thanks for all the great music !!! Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted August 25, 2016 Report Posted August 25, 2016 Can somebody remind me of all the various labels he recorded for the most regularly back in the 50's, 60's, and early 70's?? Blue Note and Impulse, of course, but I know there were others -- some of which I could half-remember right (and as many that I would probably get wrong). Could anyone hazard a guess at a list of said labels, in some rough order based of the number of albums he did for each (over his first 20-odd years in the business)? Trying to get my head re-wrapped around his total involvement in all that he did, especially back in the day. And maybe, then, (roughly) the years he was associated with each? Quote
