joshuakennedy Posted August 14, 2016 Report Posted August 14, 2016 I've been binging on Getz/Gilberto lately, but outside of that album I haven't had a whole lot of exposure to bossa nova. Any albums you guys would recommend? Quote

Looks promising. I actually just checked out that Elis & Tom album from the library a few days ago, but haven't gotten around to listening to it much yet. Edited August 14, 2016 by joshuakennedy Quote

danasgoodstuff Posted August 14, 2016 Report Posted August 14, 2016 and the two cuts Ike Q did with Grant Green doing bossa were good too (bonus tracks on Latin Bit which is more mambo or something else). Charlie Rouse's Bossa Nova Bachanal is less of a fav, but it's ok. The Zoot Sims bossa album is overarranged bandwagon hopping, but an interesting comparison to Getz nonetheless. Â The Hawkins is kinda oil and water, or is it oil and vinegar, inanycase hearing him sambasize I'm Looking Over a 4 Leaf Clover is amusing. Â Quote

Jazz musicians play Brasilian music with an American accent (understandably), just as Brasilian musicians in most cases play jazz with an accent. If you haven't seen this, it's a clip of Tom Jobim teaching Gerry Mulligan (on clarinet) how to correctly phrase One Note Samba. From and old CBS show called Eyewitness...  Edited August 14, 2016 by fasstrack Quote

I forgot all about Zoot Sims. I guess I've had more exposure to bossa nova than I remembered. Quote

I can't believe AllMusic gave it a 4/10. Thanks again for the recommendation. Quote

I'm listening to Chega de Saudade now and it sounds right up my alley. Edited August 14, 2016 by joshuakennedy Quote
Bluesnik Posted August 14, 2016 Report Posted August 14, 2016 The record Paul Secor linked to in his post is a compilation of his three first albums, which used to be out also as an EMI (I don't know who's publishing this). These are some of his finer albums, although of course Chega de Saudade is also on it. Quote
paul secor Posted August 14, 2016 Report Posted August 14, 2016 I mentioned Joao Gilberto above, and I guess his solo albums aren't "jazz". Here are two other good records that aren't jazz either: And a more recent recording: Even if they're not jazz, they're bossa nova. It's all music, and if it's good music, it's all good. Quote

fasstrack Posted August 14, 2016 Report Posted August 14, 2016 (edited) I've been a fan for many years. Toninho Horta is a unique guitarist. Also a singer/songwriter/arranger. World-class talent IMO. Here's an early recording as leader:Â Â Edited August 14, 2016 by fasstrack Quote
