clifford_thornton Posted August 15, 2016 Report Posted August 15, 2016 Very sad news. I wish I'd seen her more often than I did, but was lucky to catch her perform a few times at least. Serious, beautiful player. Quote
Joe Posted August 15, 2016 Report Posted August 15, 2016 (edited) Dang. Another adventurer lost. May she find rest now. Edited August 15, 2016 by Joe Quote
jlhoots Posted August 15, 2016 Report Posted August 15, 2016 Always an interesting player. She's on a fairly recent Steve Swell CD & is just fine. R.I.P. Quote
Jason Bivins Posted August 15, 2016 Report Posted August 15, 2016 Awful, awful news. A truly great pianist and such a kind, smart, lively person too. RIP. Quote
kh1958 Posted August 15, 2016 Report Posted August 15, 2016 I recollect seeing her live just one time--she just played a couple of songs in duet with an alto player in a concert featuring multiple artists--her short set was by far the best part of the concert. Quote
rpklich Posted August 15, 2016 Report Posted August 15, 2016 I was lucky enough to hear her twice: in a solo set at the Hungry Brain in Chicago, and once in a duet seting with Max Roach at the New Orleans Jazzfest. A great musician. Quote
Leeway Posted August 15, 2016 Report Posted August 15, 2016 I was fortunate enough to see her a number of times and came away respecting her artistry and passion for the music. It's hard to believe she's gone. RIP. Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted August 15, 2016 Report Posted August 15, 2016 RIP i second all of the above - she is the wild card on otherwise somewhat rote recent Steve Swell release. She had a young vibrant spirit in her playing when I saw her live. Quote
johnblitweiler Posted August 19, 2016 Report Posted August 19, 2016 My favorite Connie Crothers show was the evening she played the Hungry Brain in Chicago. Some members of the Tristano family were there and Connie played a whole evening of Tristano songs, solo. So melodic. She usually sounded good at Vision Festival events, too, though these were in the company of others. She seemed to inspire Henry Grimes one night a few years ago. After her long time of obscurity she apparently was active on the NY scene in the 21st century, and that was a good thing. Quote
JSngry Posted August 20, 2016 Report Posted August 20, 2016 Is it too soon to say that she never fully convinced me? Either way, RIP, and an interesting life, no doubt. Quote
