king ubu Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 Listening to the disc right now! Wow! Will have to listen a few more times, for sure, and soon, too! Love what I heard so far. Thanks, everybody! Btw: shipping is incredibly fast! Ordered it a day after I made my last post above, and got it today, already! ubu Quote
jazzbo Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 I ordered the University of Miami CD Romances and should be getting it soon; J&R had a very good price on it. On another (audio manufacturer's) board I recommended this cd and supplied a link and commentary and I think I sold four copies that way. One I bought back from the buyer because he said it was "a bomb." Hard for me to fathom that it wouldn't have been liked, especially considering some of the music I know he DOES like, but hey, it's a copy I'm going to give to a coworker who is retiring this week at her "happy hour" on Friday. . . . She loves to GARDEN so I think it's appropriate; she also likes very mellow music and dance, so I think she'll really like this. I'll find out! Quote
Big Wheel Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 (edited) Is the U. of Miami CD a live record? If so, I may have been at that show. They did Hang Gliding, among others...I think it was about a year before Allegresse came out. For me the problem with Maria is that the later music is TOO emotional for me to handle. There's something about Allegresse that cuts to the quick in a way that's almost spooky...in the second half especially, the way it drops to such a grim point on Dissolution and then ends so light and free...I just can't bring myself to play it as much as I would like. What that record does to me, I know it sounds weird, but it just doesn't feel HEALTHY to experience except in small, infrequent doses. Edited July 28, 2004 by Big Wheel Quote
Joe G Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 I've been listening to the new cd for a couple of weeks now. When I read about all this emotion that the music was evoking in many of you, I just had to hear it for myself. Strangely, it hasn't hit me in that way very strongly. My favorite is the opening piece; I think that one does the most for me moodwise (I love music that soars in that way). I think that my interest has been primarily intellectual--I like hearing how all the pieces fit together, checking out the voicings, the melodies, and so forth. There are some elements that I don't really like (the tenor solos don't really grab me), but that doesn't bother me much. It's an excellent cd, and I would enjoy the chance to see the band live. I just thought that maybe I'd have a good cry, but perhaps I didn't need one after all. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 The Romances album is not live. All selections were recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami. Unfortunately discographical details are not extensive - no dates, no individual personnel (everything except the Three Romances comes from "archived files spanning the decade of the '90s"). Completely disagree about experiencing Maria Schneider music in small doses. In fact, I feel quite the opposite: I need to listen to nothing but that stuff for several days. Mike Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted July 31, 2004 Author Report Posted July 31, 2004 (edited) Hi y'all, Just sheltering from the 40 degree mid afternoon in Granada in sunny Spain. As promised ´Concert in the Garden´ has acompanied me here and worked an absolute treat in both the Alcazar gardens in Seville and the Alcazar gardens in Cordoba (lots of Alcazars in Andalusia!). Will be trying it for a third time up in the Alhambra tomorrow. An achingly beautiful recording that more than lives up to its initial promise. Definitely my record of the year so far. Joe G Posted July 31, 2004 Report Posted July 31, 2004 This record is growing on me, too. I hear more to like with each listen. Quote
John Tapscott Posted July 31, 2004 Report Posted July 31, 2004 I'm a fan of Maria's and enjoy her CD's, especially Allegresse. I would love to hear this new CD and just went to the site to order it. But besides the $16.95 cost for the CD which is OK, the price for shipping to Canada is $6.95! There is no friggin' way I'm going to pay that. The cost for mailing a single CD to Canada from the US is under $3.00 (and usually less than that, including the mailer.) I know because I've ordered a ton of single CD's from the US over the years. Usually the postage stamp says $1.40 or sometimes even less. I would like to support Maria and all, but I'm sorry, the profit should come from the CD, not the shipping of it. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted August 1, 2004 Report Posted August 1, 2004 For you, the CD is $22 and the shipping is $1.90 - happy now? This is a 10,000 item limited edition. Since there are no alternatives for purchase, you either pay the money - all of it - without worrying about the breakdown (and seems like those who have paid are very happy with both the quality of the music and the speedy delivery) or you don't get to enjoy it. And I'd say that would be your loss, particularly as you're a fan of her other stuff. Mike Quote
David Williams Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 Well, I'll admit the postage rate (to the UK) gave me pause as well, and I'm not comfortable about it, but the music is good... better than good, and I like even better than Allegresse, I think. It's going to take some shifting from my walkman for the next week or so. Luciana Souza is a new voice for me. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted August 5, 2004 Author Report Posted August 5, 2004 Luciana Souza is a new voice for me. Her 'Brazillian Duos' on Sunnyside is a lovely disc. Just voice and guitar duets. Quote
James Posted August 6, 2004 Report Posted August 6, 2004 Heads-up for all Maria Schneider fans --- Vince Outlaw will be interviewing Maria on KSDS (www.ksds-fm.org) sometime between 6-9 pm California time on Thursday, August 12th. When I hear back from Vince regarding the exact time, I'll post it ---- just wanted to provide earliest possible notice given the fact that I found out myself a couple of hours ago. Quote
David Williams Posted August 7, 2004 Report Posted August 7, 2004 Thanks Bev - I've been looking at her CDs. Maria Schneider gets a nice write-up in the Guardian today: @ Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted August 10, 2004 Author Report Posted August 10, 2004 Thanks for that review, David. I agree with Walters about how jazz could benefit from more composition. I know there's an endless debate about this - some feeling too much composition simply dilutes what jazz is all about (there was a fascinating Brad Mehlday piece about this in one of the US mags a few months back). I tend to like careful composition. It can give interesting contours for the soloists to move around. ******** Although I'd stand by my enthusiasm for 'Brazillian Duos' I'd suggest you be a bit wary of her later 'North and South'. I found that rather dull and - dare I say it - a bit dodgy intonation wise in places. I was disappointed by it when I first heard it a year or so back. Every now and then I put it on again to see if I've missed smething but so far no luck. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted August 10, 2004 Report Posted August 10, 2004 One nit in the Guardian article - the five minute wait before the tenor solo on the last piece is actually the first section (BulerÃa). Tenor solos on the second section (Soleá), and both the vocal part and the flugelhorn solo occur in the final section (Rumba). Mike Quote
medjuck Posted August 10, 2004 Report Posted August 10, 2004 I wonder if I'm the only one on the board who downloaded "Concert in the Garden". I was feeling antsy on Sundy so I ordered 2 earlier cds along with the download so I could listen to "Concert" right away. You also get all the packaging which turned out pretty good. I've burnt a disc and am listening to it while I put together the album brochure. I really like the title piece. Quote
jazzbo Posted August 10, 2004 Report Posted August 10, 2004 I'm not a downloader. Don't have the right type of burner at home. I have bought three copies of this so far though! Quote
David Williams Posted August 10, 2004 Report Posted August 10, 2004 Thanks Bev - I was thinking of the Brazilian Duos album. I like Walters' pieces for bringing attention to some of the more off-the beaten-track items. Quote
robviti Posted August 22, 2004 Report Posted August 22, 2004 Maria Schneider will be performing at the Jazz Standard in NYC Thursday thru Sunday, September 23-26. I'm very much looking forward to this show. Definately worth staying for two sets! Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted August 22, 2004 Report Posted August 22, 2004 Joe played this for me during the tour on our drive up to Manistee. Nice stuff and an interesting concept for getting material out there. Maybe I should make the next Organissimo record "limited edition". Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted August 22, 2004 Author Report Posted August 22, 2004 Just don't make it only available from a US wine shop on purchasing two bottles of the stuff! Quote
James Posted September 4, 2004 Report Posted September 4, 2004 Just don't make it only available from a US wine shop on purchasing two bottles of the stuff! If it makes anyone feel better, $$ collected from the sale of the wine & disc go to N.Y.C. school music programs once costs have been recouped. Quote
James Posted September 4, 2004 Report Posted September 4, 2004 Oh - and should have mentioned that though I'm not a wine person friends of mine who are tell me that the wine is very good. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted September 4, 2004 Author Report Posted September 4, 2004 Oh - and should have mentioned that though I'm not a wine person friends of mine who are tell me that the wine is very good. I've no objection to the wine. I enjoy wine in a clueless sort of way. Just makes it hard to order from Europe. I hate to think what state two bottles of wine would be in after being through two postal services and any number of aircraft handlers. I'm not even sure if the wine merchants ship abroad. Quote
Joe G Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 Nice feature on Maria in the new DB. Apparently the ArtistShare arrangement is working out well for her, as she is well on her way to recouping the cost of the Concert in the Garden (about $87,000) and then some. According to the article, she actually lost money on the enja albums, and had to run herself ragged doing clinics and so forth, leaving little time to compose new music. Quote
