riverrat Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 New job, decent paycheck $$ QUICKLY passing through my hands... Quote
street singer Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 The first of many, to be sure... Don't have the Weston, so I can't comment on that one. The Jones set I do have and it's an absolute marvel. You're sure to enjoy it! Quote
DrJ Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 (edited) The Weston is essential...heavenly. Outstanding music and stellar remastering job by Malcolm Addey. The Jones is real good, but I frankly don't think it's quite as hot as some others here. Jones was a very fine trumpeter, and there's some really strong dates here but some others are not as good, and ultimately this is music that's firmly rooted within the conventions of the era and a little on the generic side. That sounds more negative than I mean it to - it's a great box. But the Weston is a cut above, you get to hear the beginnings of a true original. Sure there's some Monk and Ellington influence but ultimately he carved a very distinctive niche out for himself. Anyway, congratulations, you'll love both of these fine sets. BruceH Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 Along with the Bennie Green, these are my favorite Selects so far. I'm sure you won't be sorry! Quote
DTMX Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 Made it through yet another layoff/restructuring Friday, bought the Bud Shank/Bob Cooper Select on Saturday. The perfect way to alleviate that nagging survivor's guilt. Quote
riverrat Posted February 29, 2004 Author Report Posted February 29, 2004 Thanks for the feedback folks. I must admit that the Weston is the one that intrigues me the most. DTMX: It's too bad that people need to feel guilty about having a job these days, but it is decent of you to empathize with those less fortunate. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 I think (hope) DrJ's post came across stronger than he meant. The Carmell box is worth the price for the first (quintet) disc alone and the final disc "seals the deal". You can consider the middle disc as a bonus. Quote

And I didn't take DrJ's review as a put-down, just an honest appraisal. One of the basic truths that emerges from this forum is that even though we are all jazz enthusiasts, the way various artists and sessions strike us varies quite a bit. I feel pretty confident that I will like the Jones- the references to Clifford Brown in the Mosaic propaganda, and the time period (early 1960's) are what sold me. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 I've been wanting to get the Carmell disc for quite some time but I had to get the Patton first. I'm sure you all understand. Quote

Guest Chaney Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 I've been wanting to get the Carmell disc for quite some time but I had to get the Patton first. I'm sure you all understand. Shouldn't the first two Selects be hitting the streets pretty soon? Quote
J.A.W. Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 (edited) Shouldn't the first two Selects be hitting the streets pretty soon? At a higher price than Mosaic charged. Edited March 1, 2004 by J.A.W. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 What, are they almost sold out?!? Somebody donate one to the cause, please. Quote
Ed S Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 Shouldn't the first two Selects be hitting the streets pretty soon? At a higher price than Mosaic charged. The list price will certainly be higher. $49.98 is the list price I've seen quoted in the Mosaic brochure. Some list and retail prices of a few Blue Note sets at Cd universe: Herbie Nichols - 3 CD set $53.98 list/ $42.69 retail Getz Roost - 3 CD set $38.98 list/ $34.85 retail Bud Powell - 4 CD set $55.98 list/ $52.98 retail Monk - 4 CD set $55.98 list/ $48.95 retail The pricing and spread between retail and list is all over the place. But if the set lists at $49.98 it seems it would most like retail in the low $40s. The pre-order price through CD Universe, though, could dip below $39. Look at the Dave Brubeck pricing: Dave Brubeck - For All Time - 5 CDs $44.98 list/$31.49 pre-order Personally, I'd rather give my money to directly to Mosaic and do. I just hope that if the pre-order price or perhaps even the retail price is below $39 that people don't flip out. Quote
