Bol
"Thank you. We are looking at the Giuffre Verves, Brookmeyer Verves and Mulligan Emarcy sextets at this time." I had suggested these and some other sets. I really hope these happen. Esp. the Mulligan set.
Free For All
That is good news! I also read in one of the jazz mags that they were working on a Farmer/Golson Jazztet box, which was news to me. I'd be interested in that as well. Late
The Mulligan sextet recordings make up some great music — at least the two albums that I have. Brookmeyer and Zoot often get a chance to take off their gloves and lay into the proceedings. I'd buy a Mosaic or Select ... even though I already have some Japanese pressings. Gulp. Now ... what happened to Cuscuna's decision to release the Mulligan PJ California Concerts? I received an e-mail from him about a year ago saying that these might be out by February 2004. He also said the Japanese transfers came out well, and that he'd probably use them for the U.S. reissue. Did anyone pick up the two Japanese California Concert reissues from about a year back? J.A.W.
By the way, I also picked up two 2002 Japanese Mulligan Mercury / EmArcy reissues, A Profile of Gerry Mulligan (Universal UCCM-9123) and Mainstream of Jazz (Universal UCCM-9094). Late
By the way, I also picked up two 2002 Japanese Mulligan Mercury / EmArcy reissues, A Profile of Gerry Mulligan (Universal UCCM-9123) and Mainstream of Jazz (Universal UCCM-9094). Those two UCCM's are the ones I picked up as well. They're very nicely done. To get the full Mulligan Sextet impact from them, I burned them onto one disc, and then slipped in, from another disc, the alternate of "La Plus Que Lente" (which I think is much stronger than the master take) and the master of "Sweet and Lovely." 14 tracks of good fun. Organizing the chronology for these recordings can be something of a mess though. Rather than being done at two separate sessions, they come from multiple visits (no less than five) to the studio. Then you have to figure out if it's Jon Eardley or Don Ferrara on trumpet ... or Peck Morrison or Bill Crow on bass.
JohnS
The two Japanese Emarcy lps of alternate takes of the Mulligan sextets contains a decent discography. If anyone's interested I'll do a copy. PM me. Edited February 28, 2004 by JohnS
ghost of miles
Thanks for posting this, Bol. I've long hoped for a Mosaic treatment of the Giuffre material (I have only the twofer w/Konitz and THE EASY WAY). Not familiar with either the Brookmeyer or Mulligan, but I'd love to be! Brad
I have the Gerry Mulligan Mainstream of Jazz Special Edition put out in Japan in 1986, and I have been looking for the other cds but did not know they were reissued in Japan recently. I bought it a long time ago and haven't played it a while but what a sextet! I know there were 3 original lps for his Mainstream of Jazz series. Does this recent Japanese issue cover just one (or more) of the lps? The reissue I have covers the September 21 and 26, 1956 sessions, btw.
So perhaps Profile plus Mainstream are two of the 3 Mainstream LP. Not having a Mulligan discography that's hard to answer. BTW, does any one have a list of or source all the recent UCCM reissues. The reason I ask is that I don't remember seeing Hiroshi post these two cds and I'm sure I would have picked up at least Profile.
J.A.W.
Brad, Hiroshi did send me e-mails re the UCCM jazz items (don't have the mails anymore). Some of them are still available according to HMV Japan. Just enter "UCCM9" in the search box, select "cat.no." and the list (3 pages) will appear. Edited February 29, 2004 by J.A.W. Son-of-a-Weizen
Is there enough Emarcy material to put together a Jimmy Cleveland box? Edited February 29, 2004 by Son-of-a-Weizen

Son-of-a-Weizen
Weizen, a Cleveland box, no A Cleveland Select, possibly There were only three Jimmy Cleveland albums on EmArcy/Mercury. Yep, a Select. Combined, the 3 Clevelands I have clock in at around 101 min or so. Wouldn't it be possible to add in something like 'Rhythm Crazy' (is that technically a Lionel Hampton release?) to fill out a set? Don't know if there are any alt. mono takes or other previously unissued tracks out there that could be used to bring it into the 180/185 min. range?
