patricia Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 I've been exploring, and re-exploring, the music of Franz Koglmann. Four recordings lately: • Make Believe • An Affair with Strauss • A White Line • Orte der Geometrie Then, for some reason, I pulled out Lee Morgan's Indeed! as a sort of tonic. That opening solo on "Roccus" is a gem. Do you remember when you were 18? The kid is 18 here, just ripping up those chord changes. Hey Late!!! Thanks for reminding me that I've meant to look for Lee Morgan's debut album. I couldn't remember the title, whenever I've been in a music store. You're a prince. Quote
Sundog Posted February 29, 2004 Author Report Posted February 29, 2004 Stride piano. Lots of ticklers on my CD-player lately: Fats, James P., the Lion, Lambert, Roberts, Sutton, Wellstood... And Duke´s always in heavy rotation at my place... One of these days I'm really going to explore this genre. I've heard all the players that you've mentioned, at least at a cursory level, and really enjoyed every single note. So much music.... Quote
Bright Moments Posted November 24, 2004 Report Posted November 24, 2004 this one has been in heavy rotation for a few weeks! perfect for right before bed! B-) Quote

Joe Posted November 24, 2004 Report Posted November 24, 2004 (edited) "Jazz": James P. Johnson and two "solo reeds" discs I'm reviewing: Sonny Simmons' JEWELS (Boxholder)Makanda Ken McIntyre's IN THE WIND (Passin' Thru)Other: the Galaxie 500 catalog (even going so far as to throw in the Plexifilm DVD devoted to the band) Edited November 24, 2004 by Joe Quote
pryan Posted November 24, 2004 Report Posted November 24, 2004 Jill Scott's new disc. I'm reviewing it for the university paper that I write for. Will be in next week's paper; I'll post a link to the review/paper website if anyone's interested. Dexter Mosaic Select. Quote
Sundog Posted November 24, 2004 Author Report Posted November 24, 2004 Some of my more recent albums in heavy rotation include: James Brown: The CD of JB Maybe the best JB compilation (at least as far a single disc compilations are concerned). I've been playing this one to death lately. Pun intended. Santana: First Album (Legacy Edition) I really love this album. This edition includes the album in it's original format as well as the 1st mix down of the album which was never released because it was considered to "jammy", plus the complete Woodstock performance. This band was so far ahead of its time it's amazing they were as popular as they were. John Coltrane: My Favorite Things I believe I heard this song in a commercial the other day. Couldn't tell you what it was for, since I never pay much attention to commercials. What a shame.... but I digress. The way that Coltrane navigates his way through all those key centers on "But Not For Me" is still mind blowing to me! Bob Wills: Tiffany Transcriptions Volume 2 I need to buy more of these. Quote
Late Posted November 24, 2004 Report Posted November 24, 2004 Ever since the election, Pharoah Sanders' music has been especially cathartic, and in heavy rotation. Albums receiving the most air time: • Black Unity • Thembi • Izipho Zam From the latter album, Leon Thomas' "Prince of Peace" — listening to it in 2004 — has a curiously ironic cast. But, the following track, "Balance," steps in and shreds all doubt. And ... if Cecil McBee's solo track "Love" from Thembi isn't one of the most beautiful bass solos ever ... Quote
cannonball-addict Posted December 2, 2004 Report Posted December 2, 2004 this one has been in heavy rotation for a few weeks! perfect for right before bed! B-) Van Eps is a bad MF. Not to mention Alden, but you never hear Van Eps' name. He has been a teacher to a lot of great cats in the NY/Connecticut area. Quote
Brandon Burke Posted December 2, 2004 Report Posted December 2, 2004 I forgot about this thing until last night. What a record! Absolutely bursting with creativity and life. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted December 2, 2004 Report Posted December 2, 2004 (edited) I forgot about this thing until last night. What a record! Absolutely bursting with creativity and life. Absolutely. I only just discovered this one recently myself (maybe 3 or 4 months ago), and I'm sure I've listened to it an average of once a week since then (though more frequently after I first got it). Had it on once a couple months ago when I my wife was around, and she really dug it too. (She doesn't care much for jazz with horns, but piano trios, and piano-centric stuff is just fine with her.) In fact, I had it on --- and I hadn't made any kind of big deal about it (you know, the usual "you gotta listen to this, honey!!", when I know she's only gonna be half-interested, at best) ---but she specifically asked who it was, when it was recorded, etc... gslade Posted December 2, 2004 Report Posted December 2, 2004 (edited) The Mingus Candid Mosaic I've been on a Mingus thing lately and this is the one I keep returning to Edited December 2, 2004 by gslade Quote
ghost of miles Posted December 2, 2004 Report Posted December 2, 2004 (edited) Other: the Galaxie 500 catalog (even going so far as to throw in the Plexifilm DVD devoted to the band) Joe, I have the old Rykodisc box and love that... haven't seen the DVD. For me, Ahmad Jamal's CHAMBER MUSIC OF THE NEW JAZZ is getting played at least every other day, and Elliott Smith's FROM A BASEMENT ON THE HILL is still finding its way into my player several times a week. One of the best posthumous pop albums ever? I'm inclined to think so. The new Dinah Washington Mosaic is also turning up on the home playlist about every night--good after-work listening. ralphie_boy Posted December 2, 2004 Report Posted December 2, 2004 I forgot about this thing until last night. What a record! Absolutely bursting with creativity and life. I've only heard bits and pieces of this one, but what I heard I immediately liked. I understand that there's two different CD releases of this and one is apparently preferable to the other. Can anyone comment on this?? Quote

Can anyone comment on this?? The earlier CD issue (circa 1992) is the complete session. The "Collectables" issue (from 1999) crams two albums on one CD, and cuts a song or two from one or both dates (one tune is definitely dropped from the Hasaan date, I know that much). I haven't heard the "Collectables" issue, but I can't imagine the sound was better than the earlier single disc issue (which sounds good to me). Most of the "Collectables" dates I've heard have been less than wonderful, mastering-wise. Might be a Japanese issue of this one floating around -- but I'm rarely the one in the know about such things. I got mine at half.com for only like $5 or $6 (plus a couple bucks postage), but now the only ones there are all priced crazy at $30 and $50 a pop --- OUCH!!! And shit, they're all between $25 and $42 at Amazon.com's used marketplace too. WTF??? I know I saw multiple cheap copies on-line 3 or 4 months ago, mostly in the $10 to $15 range. What happened?? neveronfriday Posted December 2, 2004 Report Posted December 2, 2004 Ever since I got this baby (very cheap, I might add), it's been on constantly, only interrupted by the Granz Jam Sessions box. What fascinates me about the Hampton/Peterson dates is the unbelievable swing these guys could cook up when they felt like it (or when the mood grabbed them). There are several numbers on this box that just take off like rockets and keep going and going. The music just gets me in a good mood every time and with winter and all, that's not a bad thing at all. I'm also noticing that whenever I want to just kick back and have fun, I always graviate towards the 50s/60s jam and swing sessions. Hampton, Peterson, Basie, Eldridge, Newman, some Ellington, etc.. etc. etc. Cheers! Quote
ghost of miles Posted December 2, 2004 Report Posted December 2, 2004 Deus-- Yes. That 17-minute-long version of "Flyin' Home" is unbelievable. Quote
