duaneiac Posted July 15, 2016 Report Posted July 15, 2016 It's been a long time since I listened to this one, but I recall liking it. The band included some native Far Eastern instruments along with the usual jazz instrumentation. This Newport Jazz Festival concert was an Ellington tribute by the DBQ with 5 Ellington tunes, "Flamingo" (which had been a hit for the Ellington band) and DB's own "The Duke". Quote

duaneiac Posted July 15, 2016 Report Posted July 15, 2016 I have this on vinyl, but haven't listened to it in years, so maybe it's not a real "favorite", but here it is anyway. And I'm generally not a big Dr. John fan, but I thought his Ellington tribute album was good in many ways, Quote
JSngry Posted July 15, 2016 Report Posted July 15, 2016 Yeah, that Dr. John thing worked far better than I thought it would. Actually knew a DJ who would spin "I'm Gonna Go Fishing" for his crowd, and the floor would pack every time. Quote

I quite like it and it has one song (On the Wrong Side of the Railway Track) I'd never heard anywhere else. Quote
Milestones Posted July 16, 2016 Report Posted July 16, 2016 So much good stuff. Just a couple that are very special to me are the Ellington is Forever sets by Burrell and the MJQ album. There are quite a few I've never heard of or run across. The sheer number is staggering. Quote
uli Posted July 16, 2016 Report Posted July 16, 2016 i think i thought of this first on the monk thread but the tunes are about half and half iirc. Quote

Many years ago I saw James Newton and David Murray do an Ellington concert with a large-ish band. Might have leaked out on a live bootleg somewhere (from another date) but I don't think it ever made the studio. Pity. Edited July 16, 2016 by A Lark Ascending Quote
Milestones Posted July 16, 2016 Report Posted July 16, 2016 I love the Newton record as well. I even saw a group similar to the one from the record performing Duke's music at the Tri-C JazzFest. That must have been 15 years ago or more. I would like to see Newton still doing something in the jazz field. He seems to be more into modern classical and education. Quote
duaneiac Posted July 16, 2016 Report Posted July 16, 2016 Half an album is better than none -- or perhaps not in the case of the immortal Jonathan & Darlene Edwards . . . Quote
