BruceH Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 Anybody get the new UA/Capitol Benny Carter re-issue, "Sax A La Carter"? A sweet 1960 quartet date. If you'll excuse the expression, I'm lovin' it. Quote

couw Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 here BTW: not wanting to keep anyone from discussing this one further in this thread of course! I plan to pick this one up myself when it hits European shores. Quote
BruceH Posted February 27, 2004 Author Report Posted February 27, 2004 "I don't think I ever heard a bad Benny Carter album."---Clandy44 That about sums it up. The liner notes to Sax A La Carter say that when it was recorded in 1960, Carter had been recording for 35 years, yet was less than halfway through his entire recording career! It boggles the mind. One thing about Carter is that he was also a top-notch arranger, and this talent enhances many of his studio dates. Quote
DrJ Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 (edited) Blue Note certainly seems to sneak their Benny Carter reissues out with minimum fanfare (read: promotion). ASPECTS was another UA date from 1958 that came and went VERY quickly on CD a few years ago. I stumbled on it by accident long after it was OOP (at a Fry's Electronics store, no less) and have thoroughly enjoyed it. BN's "regular" reissues - e.g. not part of any special series - seem to disappear very quickly and sometimes get kind of limited distribution, so I definitely won't be hesitating in picking SAX A LA CARTER up. It does seem true that the man never made a truly bad album. Edited February 28, 2004 by DrJ Quote
BruceH Posted February 28, 2004 Author Report Posted February 28, 2004 I completely missed Aspects. ( ) Does it have Jimmy Rowles on it? Quote
montg Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 Aspects is a big band date from 1958. Pete Candoli, Shelly Manne, Joe Gordon and others...has kind of a west coast vibe I think. It's been a while since I listened to it. No Jimmy Rowles Quote
BruceH Posted March 1, 2004 Author Report Posted March 1, 2004 Pete Candoli, Shelly Manne, Joe Gordon and others... It sounds damn good...I'll have to keep my eyes peeled. Quote

mikeweil Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 The title Aspects, BTW should be understood astrologically - the angles between the positions of planets in a birth chart. You can see the signs of the Zodiac on the cover, and there is one track for each month, appropriately titled. Happy fortune telling! Quote
mikeweil Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 I' very much looking forward to the new reissue, BTW! Quote
king ubu Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 Mike, do you have "Aspects"? I love Carter - just made myself a CDR extracting the Carter sides from the Capitol Mosaic. Also had a listen to Further Definitions recently. He's so elegant, without ever getting too sweet or boring. Adorable! (He seems to be an influence on Cannonball) ubu Quote

It features a saxophone only big band and has some very WHACK arrangements by Shifrin. Very nice laid back renditions of Watermelon man and Girl from Ipanema Quote

If you'll excuse the expression, I'm lovin' it. I have not been paying enough attention, I didn't know this was out. Looks like something I will need to get this week. How much Soprano does Carter play? Quote
brownie Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 Carter plays soprano - beautifully! - on only one track. The previously unissued 'Ennui' (Boredom in french). Nothing boring about this very nice side. Quote
mikeweil Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 Mike, do you have "Aspects"? (He seems to be an influence on Cannonball) Yes I do! So what? B) He was a heavy influence on Cannonball, that's for sure, more than Parker, in some respects. Quote

Very nice laid back renditions of Watermelon man and Girl from Ipanema Bruxnickx list four more titles not included on the VeeJay/Blue Moon CD, which was its first issue, BTW. Wonder why they didn't include them, maybe the tapes are missing? Due to this it's pretty short. Quote
mikeweil Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 Carter plays soprano - beautifully! - on only one track. Any other Benny Carter on soprano out? Maybe on Pablo? Quote

Maybe those were flawed in some way, which may explain why this marvellous stuff wasn't released earlier on. Quote
mikeweil Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 John, you're Kidding! You can imagine Benny Carter flaw a track?! Quote
couw Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 John, you're Kidding! You can imagine Benny Carter flaw a track?! maybe there was some static from the electric piano they used on the other tracks (no wait, that was Warne Marsh...) Heck, what do I know, maybe the tape store got flooded or it caught fire. Maybe Bruynickx is lying. Playing this thing at this very moment BTW. Puts a B I G smile on my face! Quote

BruceH Posted March 2, 2004 Author Report Posted March 2, 2004 I'm sure I saw Aspects in a used store some time ago. Hope it's still there. Quote
