disaac Posted June 10, 2016 Report Posted June 10, 2016 DTMG is selling a whole bunch of these compilation sets (i.e. Horace Silver Complete 1952-62, Mal Waldron Complete 57-59) that appear to be label-independent for about $4-5/disc. Seems shady to me. Anyone know anything about these? Quote
mjzee Posted June 10, 2016 Report Posted June 10, 2016 These, and others like these, have been discussed many times here. Your instincts are correct: these sets are made by a company that does not have the rights to this material and has not licensed it. They are widely available. Amazon, for example, has the Silver box for $14.99 prime. Not clear to me how much DTMG is charging for the box. Quote
felser Posted June 10, 2016 Report Posted June 10, 2016 Those box sets don't even list personnel. Bad even for their genre. Quote
JSngry Posted June 11, 2016 Report Posted June 11, 2016 "label-independent" is a deliciously neutral phrase! Quote
disaac Posted June 11, 2016 Author Report Posted June 11, 2016 JS, When I wrote that, I also didn't appreciate the potential double meaning! Quote
JSngry Posted June 12, 2016 Report Posted June 12, 2016 Yeah, we spend so much time seeking an avoidance of restrictive labels that it actually sounds pleasantly liberational, unlike "ownership neutral" which is sorta nervous & manifesto-y. Quote
