Brad Posted March 6, 2004 Author Report Posted March 6, 2004 Dear Maxine, I am so thrilled that you posted here. Dex occupies a special place in all our hearts and as long as we live we will never forget him. Today, I was relistening to Dexter Rides Again. It's such an incredible album. I had heard about the festival at the Irridium and unfortunately due to family commitments I couldn't make it. I would have loved to be there. We hope you post here and give us any impressions that you would love to share with us. Quote
brownie Posted March 8, 2004 Report Posted March 8, 2004 Every day is Dexter day. Just got his new Steeplechase 'Wee Dot' release. This was recorded June 10, 1965 at Copenhagen's Montmartre Jazzhus. Enjoying this thoroughly. Dexter plays a number of songs he rarely performed: 'Take the A Train', 'My Melancholy Baby' and 'What's New'. The Danish rhythm section (Atli Bjorn on piano, Benny Nielsen on bass, and Finn Frederiksen) is reasonably adequate but Dexter was obviously in a playing mood that evening. His version of 'What's New' stands out. Seems the Steeplechase people had problems deciding for the album title. The cover and disc say 'Wee Dot'. The cover spine says 'My Melancholy Baby'. Quote
John L Posted March 8, 2004 Report Posted March 8, 2004 Keep listening to Dexter and keep thinking about him. No problem with that. Dexter Gordon just sounds better and better and better every year. What a fabulous and individual musical voice! Fortunately, we have quite a lot of outstanding recordings to keep Dex always fresh in our minds and souls. ...of course, if I could just go back once to one of those many nights when I sat in the front row of the Keystone Korner with my ear hooked to the bell of that tenor.... Great memories. Happy birthday, Mr. Gordon! Quote
mmilovan Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004 Happy birthday Dex, you'll never be forgotten! Last night (what coincidence) first time in my life I saw "Round About Midnite" (on regular TV programme). The film was, needles to say, film about last year of Lester Young's life (combined at times with Bud Powel's). Oh, people, he really WAS Pres on that film. Tall, characteristic hair, cool speach and things. And, what a music he played in that film! Crown of all crowns! Eccentric, expressive, fantastic... as well as Pres was! I like the movie, although I don't know if wider audience has the same oppinion (to introvert and much puzzle for them). "Half motherf***er" and "Lady" - who the hell will understand that Pres' language. Happy birthday Dex. I can dig you today more than I used to dig you years before! Quote
marcoliv Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004 my favorite sax player...EVER!! need i say more? Happy Birthday "Lady" Dexter Marcus Oliveira Quote
