Brad Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 Today is Dexter Gordon's birthday. His greatness and contributions don't need to be stated. They speak for themselves. So, all Dexheads report in! I'll be spinning some Dex discs today and already started by listening to some of his work with Mr. B. Happy Birthday Dex! and thanks. Quote
catesta Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 Laughin' it up with Johnny Griffin. Quote
king ubu Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 Dex keeps Gettin' Around! You know, I just don't like his sound... Quote
king ubu Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 Seriously: one of my all time favorites! That Blue Note box set is one of the most often played box sets at my place. And then all the recordings from Café Montmartre... love it! ubu Quote
catesta Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 You know, I just don't like his sound... I was going to let you slide, since I was just recently outed as a non lover of the Miles sound. Quote
brownie Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 Happy Birthday Dex! wherever you are. Was spinning 'Go' yesterday and did not notice the birthday date. What a fantastic session that was! More Dexter later today. 'Swingin' Affair' probably... Quote
DrJ Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 The MAN. Happy Birthday, hope Dex is celebrating "very saxily" somewhere. Just listened to DOIN' ALRIGHT recently, still my favorite Dex. So full of good humor, relaxed yet still with an edge to the improvisations...and one of the greatest jazz ballads of all time in his rendition of "You've Changed." Will be listening to THE SQUIRREL this weekend, far too long since I've dug that one out. Quote

PHILLYQ Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 Catesta, I have that first picture you posted of Dex on a t-shirt- it almost always draws comments & glances. Quote
catesta Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 I have it on the wall by the front door of my house. The picture also draws comments from my guests. Now, if they would only stop talking and do some listening, the world would be a better place. Quote
JSngry Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 Just got a call from Dex. He says "Thanx!" to all. Quote

Jim R Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 Another Bent Gordonsen fanatic signing in. Fitting that I spent part of the morning (without realizing it was Dexter's b-day) copying a tape for Dan. Quote
Brad Posted February 27, 2004 Author Report Posted February 27, 2004 Just got a call from Dex. He says "Thanx!" to all. Did he have any view about Miles that he could pass on to John? Quote
Sundog Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 Dex has been, and will continue to be, a constant source of joy and inspiration! Happy Birthday! Quote
littlered Posted March 6, 2004 Report Posted March 6, 2004 Thank you to all the Dexter fans who wished him a Happy Birthday on what would have been his 81st. We celebrated here in New York with a party at The Iridium with Frank Wess, Jimmy Heath, Ronnie Mathews, Rufus Reid, and Winard Harper. George Cables (Dexter's pianist) sat in, we had birthday cake, and a great time. Of course, if Dexter could have been there, it would have really been a great night. They played The Chase, Round Midnight, some mean BeBop, and sounded great. Keep listening to Dexter and keep thinking about him. Thanks so much. With love, Maxine Gordon Quote
Peter Johnson Posted March 6, 2004 Report Posted March 6, 2004 Wow. What a cool note. Rest in peace, Dex...and I know I'm not alone when I say I'll NEVER stop thinking about him. Thanks for checking in, Ms. Gordon. Quote
Jim R Posted March 6, 2004 Report Posted March 6, 2004 Maxine, Thank you for posting, and for contacting me. I tried to respond to your e-mail, but my message was intercepted by the Earthlink spam blocker. I found the above photo by searching the internet using Google. The photo came from a Brazilian website: http://www.jazzclub.com.br/images/foto-Dexter%20Gordon.gif Unfortunately, I just tried looking for more by going to their homepage (http://www.jazzclub.com.br) and trying different links, but so far I haven't even found the photo there (and no references at all to Dexter)...
