Hardbopjazz Posted June 3, 2016 Report Posted June 3, 2016 This is from Russell Malone's Facebook page. I do miss Mulgrew. What a master he was. Sonny Rollins LOVED the way Mulgrew Miller played the piano. After catching his show that night in Monaco, we stopped by Sonny's dressing room to pay our respects. After some conversation and laughs, Mr. Rollins looked at Mulgrew and then pointed to the piano and said, in that distinctive voice, "Mulgrew, there's the piano. Feel free to express yourself". Mulgrew played "Wouldn't It Be Loverly". The look on Sonny Rollins' face was priceless once Mulgrew started to play. Monaco 2007 Quote
HutchFan Posted June 3, 2016 Report Posted June 3, 2016 Thanks for sharing that. ...it's still strange that Mulgrew's gone. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted June 3, 2016 Report Posted June 3, 2016 I agree........... beautiful photo. It is strange that he's gone. Quote
sidewinder Posted June 4, 2016 Report Posted June 4, 2016 There was that period from the early 80s through early 90s that he seemed to be omni-present in live gigs during that period which I caught. First Woody Shaw, then Blakey, Tony Williams Quintet and his own Wingspan group. Certainly one of the great talents during that period and I never heard anything but very good performances by him. Justin V Posted June 4, 2016 Report Posted June 4, 2016 I wonder whether Russell Malone and Mulgrew Miller were in Monaco for a gig as part of Ron Carter's Golden Striker Trio. Did Mulgrew and Sonny Rollins ever record or work together? I'll be listening to Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw's Double Take with Mulgrew, Kenny Garrett, Cecil McBee and Carl Allen today. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted June 5, 2016 Author Report Posted June 5, 2016 I don't think Mulgrew and Sonny played together. I know they never recorded together. Quote
Gheorghe Posted June 6, 2016 Report Posted June 6, 2016 Would have been a great encounter. Love Mulgrew Miller and heard him on several occasions, with Blakey, with Woody Shaw, with Curtis Fuller/Benny Golson, all of ´em ...... Remember one strange thing, once I heard and saw him playing some boppish stuff, maybe Stablemates something like that, very Powellish and Mulgrew looked very alike Bud, the same position of his head, the same look, and the movements of the lips like the eternal bubble gum......, great musician, I love everything Mulgrew did Quote
