blue lake Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 (edited) Last night, "Out On Blue Lake" over WBLV FM 90.3/WBLU FM 88.9, midnight: Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre Kalapurush and the Light, "Here Comes the Light," Morning Song (Delmark) Bright Moments, "Dream of," Return of the Lost Tribe (Delmark). Kalaparush's first recording in 20 years. Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre, "Suite Ensemble Fate," Humility in Light of Creator (Delmark) Kalaparush and The Light, "Let Us All Relax," "In My Morning Song," "Noon," Morning Song (Delmark) Kalaparush and The Light, "I Don't Have an Answer, Unless It's God," The Moment (Entropy Stereo) The new recording is in focus and Kalaparush sounds incredible. They're recorded on CIMP, and the Entropy session from a concert in Hamtramck, MI, from 2001, so this is a BAND and it shows -- the longest performance on Morning Song (Delmark) is "Morning" at nearly 13 minutes, then 3 numbers around 6 or 7 minutes, and 7 numbers all under 6 minutes. The music is clear and to the point but hardly minimalist. This Ravish Momin on drums is a terrier, and Jesse Dulman's tuba moves confidently between creating textures and playing rhythm. This is a sleeper of a record -- Kalaparush has his sax and band under control and he's not playing unless it fits into place. Hand crafted outness. (Sorry I didn't get to Kalaparush on "Sound" or "Levels and Degrees of Light" but that is for another day). Edited February 27, 2004 by blue lake Quote

sal Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Thanks blue lake! I've been eyeing this one for quite some time, and I think now you've convinced me to take the plunge. LOTS of good stuff on Delmark recently... Quote
Nate Dorward Posted December 3, 2004 Report Posted December 3, 2004 A (largely negative) review here: http://www.onefinalnote.com/reviews/m/mcin...hs-to-glory.asp Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted December 3, 2004 Report Posted December 3, 2004 Been working to book this band in March here in Michigan. Sure, Jesse is not a tuba virtuoso on the level of the players mentioned in the review, or Bob Stewart for that matter, but his playing live was coloristic, rhythmic or just plain swinging when the band played in Grand Rapids last April. His role in the band was more like a cello or viola than a bass: sort of moving between the lead and rhythm parts. I'm ready to hear this group with Adam Lane. Kalaparush is something special. He might not always have a perfectly "on" day, but when he gets in his zone his sound is really something hard won and personal. And he's a former student of Sam Rivers, fwiw, giving him a scale based concept that moves between inside and outside with ease: as in honoring the original scale or adding notes, or sounds, outside of it. But his playing isn't really free in the sense of being sound based in total. He maintains a skeleton of formal music design to play off of. And it draws you in. Quote
Peter Posted December 15, 2004 Report Posted December 15, 2004 Very dissappointed in this one. Sidemen get a lot of space, but do very little with it. Tuba player seems to have a somewhat limited comand of his instrument. Drummer gets a lot of space but apparrently is not much of an improvizer as he does very little of interest. Quote
