duaneiac Posted October 7, 2016 Report Posted October 7, 2016 I'm a fan of old time radio shows and one program of which I have heard a few episodes is the Phil Harris & Alice Faye Show, which aired in the 1940's & 50's and starred the husband and wife team of the bandleader/singer and the former movie star/singer. I realized I had never seen an Alice Faye movie, so I watched this one. It's a pretty heavy handed biopic of the long ago stage star. Ms. Faye is good, always lovely to look at and a very good singer, but the movie itself is nothing but tired plot cliches -- even in 1940 they must have been cliches already. Third time was...*finally*...the charm. I liked this one. Â Â gregmo Quote
T.D. Posted October 9, 2016 Report Posted October 9, 2016 I had doubts about this (it's a Disney film), but figured I had to see it because I play chess and lived in E. Africa for 2 years. It's pretty good! Quote
kinuta Posted October 13, 2016 Report Posted October 13, 2016 Certain Women - Kelly Reichardt (2016) Three stories of three women in rural Montana. The sparest of narratives is really a framework on which to to hang a sketch of the melancholy, unsettlling emptiness and isolation of the country and the women. Captain Fantastic - Matt Ross (2016) Superficially resembles Mosquito Coast. Becomes more complex as the story of the missing wife is partially revealed. What part did her mental health play in shaping the radical life style of the family ? Viggo Mortenson is predictably excellent, many very engaging scenes, especially where his home education methods dazzlingly prove their superiority in the face of initial ridicule. Good cast and worth seeing but with a mediocre wrap up. Quote

All the Kelly Reichardt movies I've seen have been worth watching: Old Joy, Wendy and Lucy, Meek's Cutoff and Night Moves.  Quote

kinuta Posted October 19, 2016 Report Posted October 19, 2016 The Infiltrator - Brad Furman (2016) Solid, entertaining look at an undercover agent working inside the Medellin cartel. Good but not great. Cranston is the main reason to watch. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted October 19, 2016 Report Posted October 19, 2016 Not bad. I might have enjoyed it more if I wasn't familiar with the source material; who knows. Quote

kinuta Posted October 19, 2016 Report Posted October 19, 2016 (edited) Anthropoid - Sean Ellis (2016) Brutal, powerful, edge of the seat remake of Operation Daybreak surpasses the already excellent original. Shot where it really happened, it's elegantly directed with first rate cinematography, cast and soundtrack. One of the year's best films imo. 5 hours ago, BillF said: At 2 3/4 hours, seemingly interminable road movie in the company of intolerable teenagers. I exited at the 2 hour point. Thanks Bill. kinuta Posted October 20, 2016 Report Posted October 20, 2016 Free State Of Jones - Gary Ross (2016) Well intentioned with some excellent battle scenes but quite boring. I lapsed into clock watching. The flash forward scenes to a modern court case were bizarre and incongruous. Imperium - Daniel Ragussis (2016) Toni Collette was good. The rest of the film was a low powered mess. Daniel ' Harry Potter ' Radcliffe was fine in his nerdy FBI persona but laughable as an undercover skin head Nazi. I don't fault the lad, he did his best, but the casting decision sank the film. Perhaps a bigger fault was the lack of menace and fear that one would normally associate with a group of nihilist neo nazis. They were just too civil.
