I saw Anora a bit over a week ago (right before the Oscars in fact). I enjoyed it for the most part, though I struggle to see how it was best picture for all of 2024! Just back from seeing Guidance by Pat Mills. This screening brought together the director and most of the cast, which was pretty cool. Such a weird movie. Next weekend I am going to try to squeeze in Mickey 17. Quote
gmonahan Posted March 15 Report Posted March 15 I agree about "Anora." I thought several nominees were better. I just saw "I'm Still Here," which did win the best foreign film award, but it was far better than "Anora." Still waiting to see "The Brutalist." Quote

Haven't seen it yet. Quote

I saw "Anora" last October and thought it was not much more than OK. Stunned that it won so many awards, although I'm pleased that an indie film cleaned up rather than big-budget corporate products. My problem was that neither of the 2 main characters (young couple) was simpatico in any way, so much of the film dragged. Going to pass on "The Brutalist" because it's too darn long (around 3 hours 40 min). Edited March 15 by T.D. Quote

Maybe if it streams, so one can take bathroom breaks. Quote
ejp626 Posted March 17 Report Posted March 17 Just had the opportunity to see Rashomon on the big screen. I had seen it before but certainly a film that merits repeat viewings! In April, I will be seeing Yojimbo at the same theatre. Sadly last week was The Seven Samurai, but I just couldn't spare the time... Will try to make it on the next go-around. Quote

[I'm a Kurosawa fanatic.] I also need to see Rashomon on the big screen. Agreed on need for multiple viewings...a lot has sailed over my head so far. I've been told that cinema showings have an intermission, which is a plus, but still passing. I've seen the trailer twice, and a couple of the scenes therein (particularly with a US patron/employer) seemed too stilted and theatrical for my taste. Granted that's too small a sample - my main beef is the film's length. Quote
HutchFan Posted March 18 Report Posted March 18 I saw this documentary about Carol Sloane on Sunday: Quote
T.D. Posted March 18 Report Posted March 18 Considering seeing this in a cinema on half-price day. I like spy stories, and the director/cast should assure a certain level of quality, but there is some bust potential. Quote

T.D. Posted March 20 Report Posted March 20 Black Bag is pretty good. The film is pretty stylized/theatrical/cerebral and visually dark, so I think many might find it slow, but I really enjoyed it because of a vivid portrayal of the profoundly duplicitous world of espionage. Vaguely reminded me of (good) David Mamet work in some respects. Quote

I am going to try to catch Mickey 17 this weekend, and perhaps Fellini's La Strada on Monday. Quote
ejp626 Posted April 5 Report Posted April 5 I did see La Strada. Wow, that was depressing. I was almost wondering if I wandered into a Bergman film by mistake. 😉 I didn't manage to see Mickey 17 for a variety of reasons, but I will probably manage it tomorrow. I just saw The Royal Tenenbaums for the first time. Definitely a very strong movie. Quote
gmonahan Posted Tuesday at 08:09 PM Report Posted Tuesday at 08:09 PM Went to see "The Friend." If you like "pet helps you get in touch with your life" movies, this one is for you. I thought it was sweet, nicely acted, especially by the dog, but hardly an oscar contender. Quote
