This one was the oldest on the list, so it was the first one watched. Really well done with not a lot of "lens shifting" needed at all, which for 74 year old Western ain't bad at all, imo. The one up today was not so luck. Bend Of The River from 1952. Good core story, well-told, but also with a whole lot of period trappings that are just distracting and uncomfortable. I like Westerns, especially the ones that don't have really happy endings for anybody. Me too. "The Searchers" is a case in point. I think Duke's character knows that this happy ending won't last, and that a young woman raised in a tribe won't be happy coming back. Of course, that may just be me, but I do love that great, great Western! Quote
gmonahan Posted July 1 Report Posted July 1 Sooooo, went to see "Kinds of Kindness." I liked "Poor Things," but this one, not so much. Quote
rostasi Posted July 1 Report Posted July 1 (edited) Planning on going to see this tomorrow, then over to the Sweet Hut for goodies. It's kinda like the Mahabharata meets Mad Max. Edited July 1 by rostasi Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted July 5 Report Posted July 5 World on a Wire (German: Welt am Draht), a 1973 German sci fi TV serial, directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, courtesy of the Criterion Channel. Very prescient. Quote
JSngry Posted July 11 Author Report Posted July 11 Thinking about going on a Burt Lancaster kick sometimes this year. Quote
Joe Posted July 11 Report Posted July 11 Pretty interesting film. As the poster suggests, it has more in common with Rebel Without a Cause than, say, The Defiant Ones. A Hecht-Hill-Lancaster production. https://www.mgmplus.com/movie/take-a-giant-step Quote

JSngry Posted July 21 Author Report Posted July 21 It is. Starts off a little fluffy but gets dark and then keeps getting darker. Quote
gmonahan Posted July 24 Report Posted July 24 Just saw "Fly Me to the Moon." Clever and enjoyable rom-com. But it is a rom-com. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted July 28 Report Posted July 28 Just watched Fassbinder's Querelle. WOW! Quote
Dub Modal Posted August 9 Report Posted August 9 finally got around to watching American Fiction. Have been trying to catch this movie for several months. It was stellar, although the ending(s) isn't without some confusion on my part. Watched through the credits and noticed Patrice Rushen plays piano on the film's score. Check it out. Satire like this doesn't get made enough. Quote

It reminded me, in an oblique way, of Sideways. Something about the pacing, the characters, the relationships, and I'm sure the music too. Quote
JSngry Posted August 11 Author Report Posted August 11 If you like the movie... ...read the book. Quote
