kinuta Posted August 17, 2016 Report Posted August 17, 2016 Bastille Day - James Watkins (2016) Nothing especially new or original but it moves along at a good, nicely directed clip, has plenty of action, holds your attention and most of all has a splendid , muscular performance by Idris Elba. Entertaining, I thought it was ok. Quote

duaneiac Posted August 18, 2016 Report Posted August 18, 2016 A John Huston movie I'd not seen before It's an okay suspense film, nothing great, but not a waste of your time either. Dominique Sanda could not act if her life depended on it. Some of the supporting actors were much more interesting than her. Paul Newman plays an intelligence officer who commits a crime to get himself sent to prison to find out about a network that specializes in helping prisoners escape for the right price. Filmed in England, Ireland (where John Huston lived at the time) and Malta (although no falcons were seen there). "Las peliculas de Almodovar son muy complicadas" ("Almodovar's films are very complicated") says the teacher on the Spanish course I'm doing at the moment. I agree with you about Cruz - magnificent! kinuta Posted August 18, 2016 Report Posted August 18, 2016 (edited) Comforting to hear that others find his plots complicated and that I'm not in the grip of some awful, age related cognitive impairment ! I found Bad Education especially challenging. I love the film and have watched it four times, I think, but the twists and turns still give me trouble and end in repeated use of the rewind button.. Oddly I found Volver one of his easier, more accessible films, the easiest being Talk To Her. Penelope is a goddess I'm madly in love with her. Edited August 18, 2016 by kinuta Quote
Jazzmoose Posted August 19, 2016 Report Posted August 19, 2016 Not bad, but I expected more from Fritz Lang. Quote

I haven't watched Bad Education yet, so I've been warned! My little trick is to keep Wikipedia's plot summary at the ready!   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Education_(film) Quote

The synopsis gives a clear idea of why I found it so labyrinthine. Don't let that deter you, it's a great film.  Quote

kinuta Posted August 23, 2016 Report Posted August 23, 2016 (edited) Don Siegel double bill. Dirty Harry (1971) Better than all the sequels. Great score by Lalo Schifrin, best appreciated with headphones. Great evildoer in Andy Robinson, simply called The Killer in the credits. The Killers (1964) Pulp Fiction. Love the cast, the two hitmen are priceless , Saint Ronnie in his only role as a baddie, Angie Dickinson as 'the moll' , Cassavetes as the sucker. Edited August 23, 2016 by kinuta Quote

duaneiac Posted August 25, 2016 Report Posted August 25, 2016 (edited) A good, but not great noirish film. Stirling Silliphant's screenplay is nicely structured to set up the flashbacks which fill the audience in on the main character's backstory/plight and Jacques Tourneur makes some nice transitions between the present and past in those scenes. The suspense may not be as great as the poster touts, but the movie held my interest all the way through. Anne Bacroft was very good. Even today she is probably not as appreciated as an actress as she should be. Even Aldo Ray is good and I can't say he's ever been a particular favorite of mine. James Gregory is cast as an insurance investigator, but it kind of feels like "Inspector Luger, The Early Years". At only 79 minute, this is a movie well worth your time. Al Hibbler sang the title song.
