king ubu Posted May 6, 2016 Report Posted May 6, 2016 German trombone player Johannes Bauer has reportedly died of cancer, not quite 62 years old (born July 22, 1954). Confirmed on his brother and fellow 'bone player Konrad "Conny" Bauer's homepage: http://www.connybauer.de/en/ Most fond memories of some concerts (including an unforgettable set by Doppelmoppel with both Bauers), less fond memories of others ... but he was the genuine thing for sure. Sad to see him go, and too early at that. Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted May 6, 2016 Report Posted May 6, 2016 Just about to post this as this is shot to the gut for me having never seen the boisterous one live and in person. What a sound he made. An integral part of the Barry Guy New Orchestra and is well featured on both of the incredible Mad Dogs boxes on not two. I have always had a very strong fondness for the committed out dudes on low brass and he was one those dudes. RIP, Sir Quote
OliverM Posted May 6, 2016 Report Posted May 6, 2016 Very sad and sudden news. I had the chance to seem him a little above a year ago with Alan Silva and Roger Turner at the Instants Chavirés and was amazed by such a personal voice. He will be missed! Quote

Olie Brice Posted May 7, 2016 Report Posted May 7, 2016 A sad loss, great trombonist and lovely bloke. I did a really fun tour with him a few years ago with Mark Sanders and Mikolaj Trzaska, was a joy to play with. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted May 9, 2016 Report Posted May 9, 2016 RIP. Only saw him once, in duo with Fred Van Hove, but he and they were fantastic. Listening to "Round About Mittweida" on LP right now. Quote

Listening to "Round About Mittweida" on LP right now. He surely was one of Fred Van Hove's favourite playing partners. I saw them together many times in different combinations. He always seemed to be around really. When a trombone was called for in a free jazz ensemble, Hannes was there. Not the most subtle player, but always generous, good humoured, playing with full commitment and lots of gusto. And a most agreeable man too. RIP Quote
Clunky Posted June 19, 2016 Report Posted June 19, 2016 I missed this thread , very sad to hear. I was enjoying his playing on Barry Guy's Mad Dogs set the other day . RIP Quote
