Bol Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Has anyone had experience with this? There is a seller in Japan (not Hiroshi Tanno) who has these CDs I really want, and he wants payment in IPMO, and not in paypal. Now, he wants it in Japanese yen. But I went to the post office today, and they told me that they can issue IPMOs only in US dollars. Hmmm... I'd really like to get these CDs but don't know how. Quote
Eric Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 maybe a bank??? have you asked Hiroshi if he can get the stuff? often he can even if not listed on his web site ... Eric Quote

Why don't you ask Hiroshi Tanno to act as a middleman and get them for you? He'll probably charge you a fee, but it might be the only way to get them - unless a board member living in Japan is willing to oblige, of course. Quote
Bol Posted February 26, 2004 Author Report Posted February 26, 2004 maybe a bank??? have you asked Hiroshi if he can get the stuff? often he can even if not listed on his web site ... Eric Hiroshi cannot get these CDs as they are out of print even in Japan. I had asked him earlier, and he could not. I am considering asking him to send this seller a check in yen, and paying Hiroshi by paypal. Do you think I would be asking Hiroshi to do too much, and/or putting him in an awkward position? Quote

J.A.W. Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 I sent Japanese cash by registered letter in similar cases and never had a problem. Quote

Very difficult to buy from him. Quote
grey Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Do you think I would be asking Hiroshi to do too much, and/or putting him in an awkward position? You should certainly offer to pay Mr Tanno a service charge/handling fee. He is in business and shouldn't be expected to do this gratis. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Call around the local banks. They might be able to get you some Japanese yen if given a few days. Quote
Brandon Burke Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 You can get them at the post office. Quote

Bol Posted February 26, 2004 Author Report Posted February 26, 2004 You can get them at the post office. Yes, I know I can get them at the post office. But it seems that I can get them only in US dollars and not in Japanese yen. Or do you know differently? Quote
Claude Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 (edited) I used some international money orders on Mosaic auctions I won from US sellers. Here in Luxembourg, they cost 8 Euro (no fees for the receipient). They money is paid to the post office and takes 2 weeks to arrive. The receipient gets it from his post office. I paid Euros, the US seller received dollars. Edited February 26, 2004 by Claude Quote
Brad Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 I use to use these to pay Hiroshi and you can only get them in Dollars which was fine with Hiroshi. The USPS is not going to issue them in Yen. This was the only kind of m.o. he could use without incurring large fees. This ought to work with your seller. As an alternative, there's always paypal which pays in Yen. However, you might have to pay the fees. Quote
Dave James Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 I've used IMO's to pay Mr. Tanno on several occasions. Never a problem, but then again, he never asked for payment in Japanese currency. I think they have some fairly weird banking arrangements over there that can wind up costing sellers money if things are not handled correctly. There used to be several posters from the old BNBB who lived in Japan. Too bad they don't play in this pen. I recall several years ago buying Tina Brooks' "The Waiting Game" CD from Early Records for Victor Christensen who lived in Denmark (old timers will certainly remember Vic). Hiroshi sent it to him for me. I agree with what several other posters have said, if you're going ask Hiroshi to act in your behalf as an intermediary, it would be a good idea to offer him some sort of compensation. It would also help if you have done business with him in the past. Up over and out. Quote
Bol Posted February 26, 2004 Author Report Posted February 26, 2004 (edited) What do you think would be an appropriate level of compensation that I should offer to Hiroshi? I am thinking of asking him to send a check to this other seller, and just sending the same amount plus compensation amount to Hiroshi by paypal. Edited February 26, 2004 by Bol Quote

Brad Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Another alternative is to wire the money but that might cost you around $25 or so. Quote
PHILLYQ Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 Bol, Do you live near any large banks? They might be able to convert some USD into yen. You won't get a favorable rate and there might be a service charge, but if you could do that, then you could send cash via registered mail to your seller. Or there may be an office of American Express somewhere near you. If there is, call them to get an approximate rate and service charge quote and then decide from there if you want to go that way. Another possibility is if you have an American Express card- call their customer service number and explain what you'd like to do- they should be able to help you. You might need to get a bank account number for the seller. Quote
Bol Posted February 27, 2004 Author Report Posted February 27, 2004 Thanks for these ideas. I will find out whether the seller is willing to take a IPMO if I offer to pay any conversion charges, and then take the next step if he refuses. It is not easy to buy yen where I live. It would cost a lot, and it will take a number of days. Bank transfers cost $20 and is instantaneous, so that may be the worst case scenario (short of not getting the CDs). Quote
