Jim R Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 I just upped a thread (the only JW thread here at Organissimo) on her, but then realized that it's in the "New Releases" forum. So, I decided to start another one. On the radio this morning, I heard a track called "I Remember Dexter" from her THIS SIDE UP (Maxjazz) CD. I was knocked out, and when I found out it was JW, I knew it was time I started exporing her work. Up to now, I have only heard a few things on the radio, mostly Monk material. I read on her website that she worked with Philly Joe Jones when she was still a teenager, and later was house pianist at the Keystone Korner, working with Dexter, Getz, and many other greats back in the 70's. I've been impressed by everything I've heard from her, but just have never gotten around to really checking her out. So, for any fans out there who know her work, please fill me in... Quote
sal Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 She has another album on MAXJAZZ called "Alone", where she plays solo. She's wonderful. I still can't figure out why she isn't more well known. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 I'll agree, I have only about five of her recordings, and I love her playing. The Maybreck Recital cd is one of my favorite in the series. As I am collecting Geri Allen and Renee Rosnes at the moment, I'll probably begin collecting Jessica too as funds allow. . . . All three of these women are players that are really amazing me. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 I agree, Sal; Alone is a favorite. I only have three discs with her, so I can't claim to be a fanatic, but I love what I've heard. Quote
marcoliv Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Jim, thanks for the input! i love Maxjazz releases and some of her Concord releases are largely available here on 2nd hand stores...never paid attention to them! Marcus Quote

JohnS Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 Jessica's recordings are something of a blindspot for me, initially very nice but they don't stand repeated playings. I've been at a couple of her solo gigs and she's come over well, great personality. Quote
BeBop Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 I spent many happy evening at the Keystone, listening to Ms. Williams. Have also enjoyed several of her more recent recordings, especially the small group with local legend, Bud Spangler. Quote
pepe Posted June 24, 2004 Report Posted June 24, 2004 (edited) I just bought I let a song go out of my heart and the Real Deal directly from her http://www.jessicawilliams.com Fast service and more money to the artist. And I don't agree she does'nt hold up for repeated listening, I always spend some time figuring what she is dong in the left, the lines in the right and the interaction. Of the two, after just a couple of listens I actually like Real Deal best - thought maybe it would be the opposite. Might have something to do with the Ellington tunes played by other piano players than Edward Kennedy - I always tend to think about what he sounded like. IMO he was an excellent piano player with very individual voicings and a fantastic sense of dynamics. Edited June 24, 2004 by pepe Quote
