ghost of miles Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Same here. You lucky son-of-a-gun, you son-of-a-weizen! How's the booklet for that Brooks box? Quote
Brad Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 The Mobley set, still the best IMHO. Quote
Dave James Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 I think it was the Serge Chaloff, but it could have been the Tina Brooks. I keep the receipts in he boxes too, but I'd have to look to be sure. Up over and out. Quote
pryan Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 About three years ago I bought the Lee Morgan set after it went on last chance. There were about ten left when I called. Quote
GA Russell Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Monk Blue Note and Mulligan/Baker in '86. Quote
Jim R Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 I don't remember how I got on their mailing list, but I was lucky enough to get their mailings (pre-"brochure") from the get-go. I bought the Monk LP's. Later on I sold it (along with the Clifford Brown and Tina Brooks LP sets) when it was all out on CD. Quote
king ubu Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Oh, HELL I WISH I WAS 15 YEARS OLDER!!! I got started with Tristano/Konitz/Marsh, probably around 1998 - it was pretty new when I got it, but not the latest release anymore, I guess. Oh how I miss some of the older ones that were never reissued on any other label! ubu Quote
mailman Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 (edited) I got the Tina Brooks, the Herbie Nichols, and the Port Of Harlem Jazzmen around the same time when they first came out. How long ago was that anyway? Edited February 27, 2004 by mailman Quote
mikeweil Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 Monk on Blue Note was my first, I think when it was just out. Got the Mulligan/Baker, Ammons/Lewis and Art Pepper with the second order. Then I believe it was the Tina Brooks. I intended to get them all, but funds wouldn't allow ..... Quote
LAL Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 Sam Rivers in 2001. Wish I'd gotten in 2-3 years earlier - just in time to get the Ellington Capitol, Basie live, Lee Morgan etc. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 Ammons/Lewis in the early '80s when first issued. Last one was Patton Select. Need to order the Amy and Eldridge sets. Quote
JohnJ Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 Jimmy Smith at a used store, Disk Union, in Tokyo around three years ago. The price was around $14 per disc and since then I have bought several more OOP sets at the same price from various Disk Union outlets. Love them all. Quote
agenbite Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 I've only recently discovered Mosaic in the past year or so, but once I did I went on a tear. First purchase was the Select Moncur, last was the Gerald Wilson box. In between those purchases: Select Randy Weston Byrd/Adams Max Roach Blue Mitchell Bix/Tram/Teagarden Mulligan Concert Band Horace Parlan Teddy Wilson Trio yum yum eat 'em up. Quote
jazzmessenger Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 First set via eBay - Grant Green with Sonny Clark in 1997 or 1998. First set directly from Mosaic - Sam Rivers when it went OOP Quote
Uncle Skid Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 Blue Mitchell. Can't decide what's next: Mobley or Tristano/Konitz/Marsh. Quote
Hank Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 The Mulligan/Baker (on CD) and the Ammons/Lewis (on vinyl--they'd already sold out of the CD). Quote
andersf Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 (edited) First set was probably Buck Clayton early 1990s. The begining of an addiction. Today I got a message from the post office that the last order Woody Herman & Johnny Hodges has arrived. The Hodges was a sort of precautionary maneuver; Verve sets can sometimes go OOP without warnng. Favorite sets; for variety; the Capitol set; otherwise JJ Johnson, Gerald Wilson and now Gerry Mulligan. As a parenthesis; I have read somewhere that men unlike women tend to make everything into a project (vacations, whatever); if true I suppose we have an explanation as to why mosaic collecting appears to be a hobby not always approved of by spouses and girl friends. Sometimes the newspapers have stories of weird collections and their (almost normal) owners. I think the latest was someone who crammed his house and garage full with old radio and TV-sets. I then take the opportunity to point out to my wife that as far as collecting habits are concerned, collecting Mosaic sets is by far not the worst. This observation, I regret to say, has not yet made much of an impression. Edited February 27, 2004 by andersf Quote
Alexander Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 The Jackie McLean in (I think) Spring of 1994. Quote

Hardbopjazz Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 My first sets were Larry Young and Grant Green/Sonny Clark. Both great sets. Quote
