The second Ampex model 5258 8-track 3 was sold to Atlantic Records at Tom Dowd's insistence in early 1958.^[6] Atlantic was the first record company to use a multi-track recorder in their studio.

That sure didn't help their jazz recordings much. Other engineers and companies did a lot more with less.

I generally agree, but to be honest I think the mono mixes are decent on many sessions and extraordinary on some. Whenever I've been able to compare I generally prefer Atlantic mono releases.

I was told many years ago (by Cuscuna maybe?) that the Atlantic fire only destroyed the 8 track masters because the LP masters were stored somewhere else. It would seem that not all mono LP masters were stored in the same place as the stereo ones.

So, now a mono version of “My Favorite Things” is out. I have a copy arriving this afternoon and am anxious for the explanation.
