brownie Posted July 30, 2007 Report Posted July 30, 2007 Nice video of Billy Strayhorn playing piano with the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1965: http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=Tjc7mu9leYw Quote
AllenLowe Posted July 30, 2007 Report Posted July 30, 2007 Strayhorn is interesting, but if I never hear Lush Life again it will be just fine with me - strange thing is, if you call Nessa on the phone, it's on his answering machine along with Wooly Bully - Quote
thomastreichler Posted July 30, 2007 Report Posted July 30, 2007 I really like the fullblown Strayhorn alone things tons. The four cds on Challenge by the Dutch Radio Orchestra are just amazing! I second that recommendation. These recordings are terrific from every point of view: they feature (for the most part - even Strayhorn was not everytime consistently on the same high level) marvelous compositions and arrangements, the Dutch Jazz Orchestra plays them with absolue authority and the soloists are first rate. AllenLowe Posted July 30, 2007 Report Posted July 30, 2007 just on a serious note, there's an old blindfold test with Miles Davis in which he correctly identifies a Strayhorn, as opposed to Ellington, arrangement for the band - Miles was sharp - and my favorite Strayhorn tunes are Johnny Come Lately and Rain Check - great themes, both of them, and very original - Quote

mikeweil Posted July 30, 2007 Report Posted July 30, 2007 Was the Roulette LP under Strayhorn's name ever reissued on CD? I have a cheap Italian issue of this and wonder why it esacped Cuscuna's radar. Quote
brownie Posted July 30, 2007 Report Posted July 30, 2007 Those 'Strayhorn' sides were included in the Cuscuna-produced release of the Roulette double CD 'Live at the Blue Note' in 1994: Malcolm Addey remixed the date. Quote
mikeweil Posted July 30, 2007 Report Posted July 30, 2007 Thanks, brownie! Will be looking for this one! Quote
Tillugg Posted July 31, 2007 Report Posted July 31, 2007 THE Strayhorn CD to get . I've heard about this disc before. It's really expensive on Amazon! Does anyone know if the music is available elsewhere? I'm particularly interested in the quintet sessions with Clark Terry and Bob Wilber. Thanks! Quote

flat5 Posted August 2, 2007 Report Posted August 2, 2007 I can't see Strays as a detriment to the Ellington legacy because lots of the music would not have been produced without him. OTOH, other stuff would have been written... I love the album "Masterpieces by Ellington". Strayhorn's influence is all over that one. I think he did more good than harm. Quote

I've loved the French CBS version I had of this (as part of the 1947-1952 set which is so valuable!) and the US reissue just increases the majesty. Quote

The solo live version of Lush Life, with Strayhorn singing as well as playing piano, is a heartbreaking work of staggering genius. Quote
