Pianist/arranger Mary Lou Williams caught a break in 1931 when Andy Kirk's Clouds of Joy pianist didn't show for a recording session. She became one of the band's featured soloists, then eventually wrote music for Benny Goodman (she introduced him to Charlie Christian, he invited her to play his 40th anniversary Carnegie Hall concert).
