medjuck
It looks like they are condensed versions of broadcasts contained in the DETS series.
king ubu
That's what the writing on the back of the box suggests, yes. But in absence of tracklistings, the DEPanorama website isn't really helpful either (they don't seem to have any numbering that fits with the one on the website for the 10CD set). Same with Bruyninckx... too bad, but I guess then this 10CD set might be a good buy for someone who hasn't started buying the Storyville 2CD sets (of which I own six so far, eight more to go...) Bruyninckx has an album listing at the end of his Ellington entry, including the following: D.E.T.S. 1 – Your Saturday date Vol. 1 D.E.T.S. 2 + 3 – Your Saturday date Vol. 2 + 3 D.E.T.S. Vol. 4 + 5 – Treasury show D.E.T.S. Vol. 6 + 7 – Treasury show D.E.T.S. Vol. 8 + 9 – Treasury show D.E.T.S. Vol. 10 + 11 – Treasury show D.E.T.S. Vol. 12 + 13 – Treasury show D.E.T.S. I believe these are the original LP series that issued Treasury shows. The Storyville series is reissuing these on CD and add bonus material. I have eight of the Storyville sets. brownie
The original DETS vinyl series: Still have the full run of it. Volumes 1 to 30 acquired from the Paris Jazz Corner shop shortly after its opening. Bought the rest of the series during one of my first visit at the Princeton Record Exchange! The LPs came in plain white sleeves with blank back covers. Two-page notes inserts accompanied each LP. The Storyville CD series adds more broadcasts to the original LP releases. medjuck
So were there 48 shows altogether? That would mean there are 10 more DETS cds to come.
brownie
So were there 48 shows altogether? Plus one, a bonus LP #49 (an August 1953 broadcast from Chicago's 'Blue Note'!
bichos
i have two lp´s of the treasury series on the swedish "phontastic - nostalgia" label from 1982. they re-issued the whole serie from the first lp release for the members of the merrit record society. i hope that storyville will continue their d.e.t.s. cd´s! keep boppin´ marcel
brownie
There were only seven or eight of those Phontastic DETS LPs. The early releases from the Treasury DETS also came out on the Fairmont label in the US (Mel Torme's label?).
king ubu
By coincidence I recently just dug out the one Phontastic LP I've got - the Washington DC concert from 1955 - a very nice one!
bichos
thanks for the info, brownie, i have vol. 6 and 7 and vol. 7 has by error 1955 instead of 1945 on the front cover. keep boppin´ marcel
brownie
At least those Phontastic DETS had full liner notes with all the content details!

NOJ, My collection isn't much more extensive than yours, but this is stuff you absolutely need: The Webster/Blanton recordings (Never No Lament or other recording) late 20s/early 30s stuff (Okeh Ellington on Sony and Early Ellington on GRP are from this period - European labels probably also cover it) Ellinton & Hodges Side by Side (one of my favorites) This is stuff that you'll want: New Orleans Suite [many would put it in the prior category] Three Suites Afro Eurasian Eclipse And His Mother Called Him Bill The Ellington Suites Latin American Suite stuff you can probably skip: 1969 White House All Star Tribute

jeffcrom
What do you all suggest I get next? I would add The Great Paris Concert, my favorite of all of Ellington's latter-day live recordings, and one of my desert island Ellington discs.
