king ubu Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 So anyone knows if this is Left Bank Jazz Society material or not? Quote

MG You can also try it with a camera if you have a smartphone or any other device ... if the light is good and you can figure out some angle that works without too much reflection and distortion, it can turn out pretty decent. Hur hur, I don't have a smartphone, either. My wife got herself an ipad for Christmas but she won't let me use it and, as for getting her to do shots of West African K7s, well, forget it! A friend of my daughter's does them, but I haven't yet succeeded in being able to copy the three he sent, via her, from his iphone. And, between them, they're slow as arseholes, as we used to say in the Army. MG Quote
crisp Posted February 5, 2016 Report Posted February 5, 2016 When I began ripping my CDs to FLAC I immediately decided not to bother with album artwork. Saves a lot of bother. Quote

So the only question that comes to mind is whether this is a stray Left Bank tape making it's way to Uptown or are there more in the pipeline? For that matter will we ever see more of the Piccadily tapes? It's like 2 or 3 years since the Hank was released, isn't it? I remember reading Joel Dorn state (when he had access to the Left Bank tapes), that most had deteriorated to unlistenable and unreleasable condition. You insiders might know the veracity of that claim. Edited February 8, 2016 by robertoart Quote
king ubu Posted February 8, 2016 Report Posted February 8, 2016 okay, but still no one really knows if this IS a Left Band Jazz Society tape or not? Quote

Dan Gould Posted February 8, 2016 Report Posted February 8, 2016 And since it is, perhaps there are more of those cassettes that are salvageable. I'd really like to know if this is a one-off or a new Uptown source of more archival releases. Quote
Niko Posted February 8, 2016 Report Posted February 8, 2016 it's also included in Ellery Eskelin's list of Left Bank concerts (20 March 1966) http://home.earthlink.net/~eskelin/leftbank.html apparently, the Crystal Ballroom was a substitute location for about eight weeks in 1966 Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted February 8, 2016 Author Report Posted February 8, 2016 It is a Left Bank recording!!! Quote
AllenLowe Posted February 8, 2016 Report Posted February 8, 2016 I absolutely love the school of sour-toned alto; McLean, Sonny Red, occasionally Ernie Henry, Quill when he's high enough, and me when I forget to tune. Quote
JSngry Posted February 9, 2016 Report Posted February 9, 2016 John Jenkins & C. Sharpe too, yeah, that whole "street" side of Bird thing, unapologetically street. Shafiq Hadi. And really, Roscoe too, I think. Quote
king ubu Posted February 9, 2016 Report Posted February 9, 2016 Interesting thought re: Roscoe - but yeah, makes sense! Quote
AllenLowe Posted February 9, 2016 Report Posted February 9, 2016 yes, all of the above - particularly C Sharpe. Forgot about him. Quote

It will accommodate an 8 1/2" x 14" sheet of paper (or one of your A4's); one sad limitation is it will not accommodate an LP cover.  But for the other things I use it for (CD covers, K7's, and, of course, to use it as a copier), it's a great solution. Quote
John L Posted March 11, 2016 Report Posted March 11, 2016 I just had a chance to hear this one - a VERY nice recording. Add Sonny Cox to the list of fine "sour" altos. Quote
jlhoots Posted March 11, 2016 Report Posted March 11, 2016 I pre-ordered from Amazon ($12.99). Haven't received it. Listed as "temporarily" out of stock. Hope it eventually shows up. Quote
