Claus Ogerman

I've been listening to cop some of his stuff for my own string writing. He is so pristine and clear---and can say so much more with simple unisons (especially with strings) than other over-writing arrangers who write more notes and use more trick bags. It's like if Pres were an arranger. He touches my heart.

To start out I would recommend the album Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim; and the two Jobim collaborations: Stone Flower and Wave.

fasstrack, I'm not all that familiar with Ogerman -- but I agree with you that Wave and Stone Flower are both something special.

I think he's retired, but when active did great work with not only the above, but Wes Montgomery, Oscar Peterson, and many others.

There is a dissent because of unclarified usage rights between UMG and GEMA, the German ASCAP!

But composers do that a lot, and arrangers also 'ghost' a lot. Bob Brookmeyer wrote some uncredited charts for Ray Charles I know. I forgot who got the byline. Billy Byers, maybe?

Ogerman is credited on Drifters singles (reissues on Atlantic) in my collection, that's how I knew.

Ogerman has died in March - seems the rumour was out among friends and musician colleagues, but it only just got public.

I have to confess it took me quite a while to develop an appreciation for his art - when I got into jazz my rigorously opinionated teenage-self would not hold much interest in singers and would snarl at "with strings" albums (Clifford Brown's album was an early exception), when I wanted Wes Montgomery I went for Riverside, not Verve etc. But I did somehow always like Diana Krall. She was there and I knew her when I started getting into jazz, so I kept buying her CDs for a few years - and when she made that diva album with Ogerman arranging, I kinda slowly started figuring out that some of it was pretty good and the arrangements really didn't get in the way ... eventually, Ogerman kept popping up on all kinds of albums I bought, so there's that.

Not love, I guess, at least no all the time, but truckloads of respect.

Interesting that they kept his death under wraps, likely some complex, or potential litigation issues.
