Peter Friedman Posted April 1, 2024 Report Posted April 1, 2024 The first Haydn set I have listened to from a large number of remastered recordings on VOX from the Fine Arts Quartet and the Dekany Quartet. All were from the 1960's . The performance quality as well as the audio quality is very very good on this Op.64 session. Quote
soulpope Posted April 2, 2024 Report Posted April 2, 2024 Recorded @Â Friedrich-Ebert-Halle Hamburg in February 1989 .... fragile and lacking substance a bit, but having moments of beauty too .... Quote
Referentzhunter Posted April 2, 2024 Report Posted April 2, 2024 (edited) 50 cent find ! They go for 50-100 euro on Discogs. I don not often find rare records worth money. Edited April 2, 2024 by Referentzhunter Quote

Referentzhunter Posted April 2, 2024 Report Posted April 2, 2024 last one ... found three records (dubble lp's) worth 150-200 euro's for 1,50 euro. Remarkable ... and memorable. Quote

I think Abbado (same Zodiac sign as Mahler too but haven't heard it). Search for Adler (Mahler's protégé, same Zodiac sign too) ! Mahler's music contains strong feelings. I love Kubelik's M1 also. But my desert-island M1 is Jascha Horenstein's with the LSO on Unicorn.  In this listener's opinion, Horenstein's M1 is even more compelling than his famous M3.  Quote

I believe a rather rarely mentioned Mahler 1 contender is Herbert Kegel whose performance with Dresdner Philharmonie from 1979 (released in 1981 on Eterna) mirrors in a passionate and colourful treatment .... and speaking about "left fielders", what about the "live" recording by Kyril Kondrashin and NDRSO @ Concertgebouw on March 7th, 1981 .... quite some choices .... soulpope Posted April 3, 2024 Report Posted April 3, 2024 Recorded @ Friedrich-Ebert-Halle Hamburg in 1993 .... coincidentally recorded at the same venue as the late 90`s Bartok performances by Zoltan Kocsis for Philips .... Quote
HutchFan Posted April 3, 2024 Report Posted April 3, 2024 Now dipping into this wonderful set: CD 6 - Schubert: Symphonies No. 8 "Unfinished" and No. 9 "The Great" Thrilling stuff.   5 hours ago, soulpope said: Great performances .... still the music of Berlioz remains somehow removed from my heart 🤔 .... Oh how interesting. Isn't it mysterious how we instantly click with some artists -- while others remain opaque, no matter how much we try!? Berlioz was a composer for whom I had an almost immediate affinity. I first heard Symphonie fantastique in college, and I've been captivated by his music ever since.  Quote
