A Lark Ascending Posted January 24, 2016 Report Posted January 24, 2016 Just El Shosto off the latter. One of my favourites by him....in fact a favourite concerto, full stop. If the cadenza doesn't make the hairs on the back of your neck jump to attention you'd be advised to check your pulse. Love the way he quotes 'Windmills of Your Mind' there too. Quote

Balladeer Posted January 25, 2016 Report Posted January 25, 2016 Barber - The Complete Songs (Deutsche Grammophon) Those songs are fascinating stuff. Overall Thomas Hampson does better but Cheryl Studer is gorgous on the earlier songs (disc 1). Pianist John Browning plays in a class of its own - magnificent. Quote
soulpope Posted January 25, 2016 Report Posted January 25, 2016 another replay .... sumptuous stuff .... Quote
papsrus Posted January 26, 2016 Report Posted January 26, 2016 CPE Bach Magnificat Symphonie in D Major Heilig (for double choir) Akademie fur Alte Musik Berlin; Berlin RIAS Chamber Choir; Elizabeth Watts (soprano); Wiebke Lehmkuhl (alto); Lothar Odinius (tenor); Markus Eiche (bass) The Magnificat is somewhat more ... spirited (?) ..., less contemplative than I anticipated, but beautifully rendered here. The symphony (his most well-known?) is snappy and lean. The double choir work, Heilig, was over all to quickly. I really enjoyed this disc. Leaves me wanting more. ... Quote
