JSngry Posted February 11, 2016 Report Posted February 11, 2016 I used to live on cat naps, seriously. But once I got my sleep apnea diagnosed and addressed, and then the insomnia, I find myself unable to take them any more, except for the occasional moment when I have to take them. Tell you what though, those little 5, 10, 15 minute intervals where you just go under all the way and then wake up fully energized, those are wonderful. I wonder if that's like what happens to you when you wake up from/out of a hypnotic trance? Quote
paul secor Posted February 11, 2016 Report Posted February 11, 2016 I try to take cat naps, but I usually end up sleeping for 1-2 hours - not so cat nappish and it screws up my sleep later on. So I try to avoid naps. Sometimes, however, it just feels so good to lie down and fall asleep that I can't help myself. Quote
fasstrack Posted February 11, 2016 Report Posted February 11, 2016 I cat napped this afternoon, but that's only going to keep me up tonight. In other news, the Melatonin was a complete flop for me. Not sure what to try next... Quote
Scott Dolan Posted February 11, 2016 Report Posted February 11, 2016 I envy those who can take cat naps. I have never had the ability. Quote

After reading your post I did some web research to see if I had sleep apnea also. The symptoms do not match mine, however. The beast I'm wrestling with is old fashioned insomnia, and it has persisted for about a month now. I tried Melatonin, which was ineffective, and Lorazepam, which works somewhat, but is addictive. Today was the first day I succumbed to the condition by cancelling my plans for the day and trying to take a nap---a worrisome thing, especially if it continues. I am now sitting in the library, pondering going out tonight to sit in with friends. When I come back, if I go, it will be midnight and I will be wide awake. I'm getting worried... Quote
Scott Dolan Posted February 11, 2016 Report Posted February 11, 2016 Time to see a doctor, Joel. Quote
catesta Posted February 11, 2016 Report Posted February 11, 2016 Yep. What makes matters worse is the constant thinking about the problem. Clearing your mind is impossible. Have your doctor explore some other options. Quote
JSngry Posted February 11, 2016 Report Posted February 11, 2016 Another option is to just accept the insomnia, own it, and let it be what it is without worrying about it. Who knows, that might even lead to more regular sleep. Hi, my name is Joel, and I'm an Insomniac. Quote
page Posted February 11, 2016 Report Posted February 11, 2016 I've never been able to have naps. Why they are called "cat naps" if I may ask? Just a week ago there was an item on tv about Melatonin being the only really effective remedy that one could get without prescriptiion around here. Sorry to hear about people's problems with insomnia and sleep apnea, awful! My problem is partly mental partly physical. Stress is the main problem, I haven't been able to get to sleep easily for about 15 years, sometimes not sleeping for the entire night, or more than one night in a row. Lying awake I started thinking too much, worrying etc which obviously causes more stress. The warm milk thing doesn't work for me, never has. Quote
Scott Dolan Posted February 11, 2016 Report Posted February 11, 2016 Howdy, Page! While I don't claim to be an expert, I think the term "cat nap" came from the fact that cats can (and usually do) lay down and take quick naps throughout the day. And they are usually very short. Quote
page Posted February 11, 2016 Report Posted February 11, 2016 Ah of course. Why didn't I think of that? Thanks Scott. My cat sleeps almost the entire day, but then she is 18 and seems to need more sleep nowadays. I remember her short naps. I look at her with envy sometimes We call them "dutjes" in Dutch. (phonetic that would be: ˈdʏcə) I still find that a funny word. Quote
Niko Posted February 11, 2016 Report Posted February 11, 2016 as I'll most likely be joining the ranks of dutch board members later this year, I've indeed already started worrying about learning the language - so far, it seems so natural, but I haven't looked into the hard stuff yet, I guess Quote
page Posted February 12, 2016 Report Posted February 12, 2016 German and Dutch are very much alike, lots of similar words. I don't think you'll have anything to worry about. Where are you moving to, if I may ask? Quote
fasstrack Posted February 12, 2016 Report Posted February 12, 2016 ...And the battle continues. Last night choppy but decent sleep. No drugs besides Melatonin. Still needed coffee to focus on the day today. It's now 2:44 NYC time and my energy hasn't flagged from lack of sleep. We'll see what tomorrow brings... Quote

Busy as hell. I know that's no excuse. Last night, having woken up after sleeping 2 hours and change, I resorted to Lorazepam again. At least I slept through the night. As long as I don't make a habit of it... On 2/11/2016 at 2:53 PM, Scott Dolan said: Time to see a doctor, Joel. My doctor---who I actually like a lot---was the one who prescribed Lorazepam (at my behest). There's little else she can do but listen, or perhaps send me to a sleep specialist. Quote
Scott Dolan Posted February 13, 2016 Report Posted February 13, 2016 Yes, it's time to see a specialist. Whether you like your doctor or not, she is out of her depth and out of ideas. It's a disservice to both of you to continue to do the same thing expecting different results. Get a referral from her and move on to the next step before this insomnia becomes a health threat. Quote

So the research continues. 'I have not yet begun to fight'... Quote
fasstrack Posted February 16, 2016 Report Posted February 16, 2016 Holding steady and getting good sleep the past few nights. One catch: I'm using the Lorazepam. It's a trade-off. Don't want to get in too deep, but it's at least working. I'll take the sleep I got the last two nights and run like a thief... Quote
