Guy Berger Posted February 22, 2016 Report Posted February 22, 2016 Has anyone listened to this album? I know Relyles wasn't crazy about it which leads me to think I should skip it. Guy Quote
Scott Dolan Posted February 22, 2016 Report Posted February 22, 2016 I like what little I've heard from him. The only irritating aspect is that there seems to be yet another Avishai Cohen who is a bassist, and when you do a search in the iTunes store both artists are mixed together, which makes it difficult to know which one you're looking at album to album. I do love the way he plays, though. I need to get some of his material. Quote

I heard Avishai perform music from the CD with a quartet at the Winter Jazz Fest. The description of the music from the ECM website as "a programme of expansive and impressionistic compositions" seems appropriate. The music I heard in the concert was not bad. My listening preferences just tend to be closer to music a bit more rough around the edges or less impressionistic. I generally like Avishai Cohen's trumpet playing in the various settings that I have heard him. Quote
Larry Kart Posted February 22, 2016 Report Posted February 22, 2016 Heard Avishai with Mark Turner in concert last year and thought I was going to die of boredom. Quote

sonnyhill Posted February 22, 2016 Report Posted February 22, 2016 I liked Lathe of Heaven with Turner and Cohen. McHenry has a great tone on tenor; it will be interesting to hear him with Waits and Revis in Cohen's band. Quote

That was my initial instinct but I read somewhere that McHenry has only a limited role on the album. Quote

Some great playing by Yonathan Avishai on piano, and while McHenry is strictly an ensemble player most of the album, he does take a passionate solo on "Behind the Broken Glass". Quote
