Same here: My wife ordered it for me as a birthday present. I also got the message that the shipping will be in mid dezember, that´s about around my birthday, well if not, I hope I´ll have it for Chrismas. Anyway, during the winter holidays you can´t do so much outdoor, good occasion to read some new jazz bio. And Dexter always has been one of my favourites, life and on records. Quote
Dan Gould Posted October 26, 2018 Report Posted October 26, 2018 November 8 target date for pre-orders in the States. For some reason I thought this was a December ship date but I'll be happy to see this sooner. Quote
mjzee Posted November 4, 2018 Report Posted November 4, 2018 There's a review of Maxine's book in this weekend's Wall Street Journal. Quote
Dan Gould Posted November 4, 2018 Report Posted November 4, 2018 Made out like a bandit on the pre-shipping guarantee from Amazon. Saved almost 33%, from just under $30 to just over $20. That may be the best deal I've ever gotten on a pre-order with them. Quote
jcam_44 Posted November 10, 2018 Report Posted November 10, 2018 received my copy today. May dig into tomorrow Quote
sidewinder Posted November 10, 2018 Report Posted November 10, 2018 Just ordered it and looking forward to the read. Quote
EKE BBB Posted November 22, 2018 Author Report Posted November 22, 2018 Received my copy today... though my wife kept it apart and hid it to be delivered to me as a Christmas present... Thus it will have to wait! Quote
mikeweil Posted November 23, 2018 Report Posted November 23, 2018 Same here, exactly, only that mine is scheduled for delivery tomorrow. Quote

Dan Gould Posted November 23, 2018 Report Posted November 23, 2018 So who knew Dex called himself Society Red? I don't think I ever heard that before starting on the book. Is it mentioned in the liners to Doin Allright? Quote

The Gordon/Gregg household must have been interesting, with them referring to each other as ‘Red’ this or ‘Red’ that.. Edited November 23, 2018 by sidewinder Quote

Anyone here has started reading and can share some first impressions? Quote
Brad Posted December 8, 2018 Report Posted December 8, 2018 No one can say for sure if he read the book but I’d be surprised if a Times reviewer hadn’t read the book he or she is reviewing. Quote

Possibly he has read it ... my point was just that it doesn't show in what I find a pretty bad review. Quote

Toward the end of the chapter on the 1950s now - about 40% of the way thru I'd say. Writing is workmanlike/functional but info/insight is indispensable. If I had more time for reading I'd be thru the book a couple of weeks ago. Quote
EKE BBB Posted December 9, 2018 Author Report Posted December 9, 2018 Eagerly waiting to check if there is fresh new info on Dexter’s collaborations with Tete. In fact, I provided Maxine with tons of press articles and memorabilia many moons ago... I’m sure she will have made good use of them! Quote

One is an admiring description but without detail on their collaborations (other than how many Steeplechase recordings), the other is just in passing. Sorry Agustin! Quote
Brad Posted December 9, 2018 Report Posted December 9, 2018 I would be concerned about spending time with a book whose writing is described as “workmanlike.” Quote

It tells the tale with as much insight as we will ever have. Quote
