A Lark Ascending Posted December 27, 2015 Report Posted December 27, 2015 Interesting if rather sad article: All that jazz: remembering my grandfather and John Wayne Had to smile at this: "On his return from Germany, Ray fulfilled his dream of buying a jazz club. Despite breaking his leg in two places, he loved to dance." Can't image sentence two would follow on automatically from sentence one today. Quote

Maybe what she meant to say was "Despite HAVING BROKEN his leg in two places .... "(during the war or wherever ...) Further on down in the text there are a few instances that seem to indicate a lack of proofreading too ... But an interesting, down-to-earth story indeed. I wonder how many families lived through situations of "missed opportunities" like this ... Quote

It was the idea that he enjoyed dancing so the natural thing to do was start a jazz club! Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted December 27, 2015 Report Posted December 27, 2015 Not so sure about small-town (or medium-sized town) U.S.A. in the early 50s. Local dancing bands (including big bands) still did have a loyal audience there that kept the clubs going for occasional visits by the big names. Of course that's quite different today. But maybe it's not even quite as unthinkable today as it was one or the other decade ago. I think the pendulum swings a LITTLE bit back here and there. Unless you lump only "far-out jazz" into the jazz category. Quote
crisp Posted December 27, 2015 Report Posted December 27, 2015 In the UK it seems to be the law that if a newspaper article is about jazz the headline has to be "All That Jazz". Quote

crisp Posted December 28, 2015 Report Posted December 28, 2015 That's how -- by law -- you finish a preview of a jazz TV or radio show. Quote
