I just got an e-mail announcing that Mosaic was offering a 5 Lp package of the Mulligan sextet on Mercury.  I guess since they aren't doing the Selects anymore this may never appear on cd.  Too bad.

Wouldn't expect a CD release there ... but yeah, a pricy but official alternative to the Lonehill 2 CD set ...

I think I have much of this one on 1980s Japanese vinyl - will have to check.

I remember seeing them on Japanese vinyl (all with bluish cover picture of Mulligan in tartan jacket) the very last time I visited Dobells in its final resting place in Covent Garden. I didn't buy. They were very expensive imports and the vinyl quality was said to be poor.

This one seems to have flow under the upcoming releases radar - or at least I had not seen anything.  I really enjoy Mosaic vinyl and am glad they are still putting things out in that format.  Just picked up the Kirk set during the recent mini sale.

I have all of this on vinyl so it's not something I'll be getting.  Nevertheless well overdue for reissue.  I'd rather see a complete cd edition.

How is the sound quality in the 3CD 'The Fabulous  Gerry Mulligan Sextet ' box from Freshsound?

I'm assuming there will soon be an announcement of a CD box set of the same material from Hip-O Select.  It makes no sense that Mosaic would do all this work just to release it on LP only.

Me too. But the Hip-o-select site is no more. I couldn't find anything searching the Universal site. We must keep our fingers crossed.

The Mosaic holds 34 tracks, whilst the Lonehill 2CD set and the respective two discs of the Freshsound 3CD set contain 28 tracks.

And wow, wasn't aware of Hip-O-Select having been gone. Sad!

I have to wonder if, assuming it still even exists, Hip-O-Select would bother, given that most of the material is available (albeit not entirely "officially") on Lonehill and Freshsound.  I wish they would, of course!

Just got this email from Scott Wenzel:

 

We wanted to update everyone regarding the release date. The James P. Johnson CD set is expected to ship by early January and the Gerry Mulligan LP set is expected late January/February.

 

We did plan on having an earlier release date and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Mosaic finally got this set out to me this past week!  I have only given it a taste so far, but once again the quality audio (and playing, of course) from the LPs brings a tear to my eye. I just hope Mosaic continues to keep these LP releases going. I missed all the initial ones, and while I cannot at all claim to be an audiophile with a particular noteworthy hardware setup, I just love to hear this stuff on an LP issued by a label that I know will do the best they can with the source material.
