Claude
Thanks. This collection has been popular on many music forums a few months ago.
Dan Gould
Amazing that one of those covers is for an LP that spawned a huge top 40 hit, Still The One. What the hell were the members of Orleans thinking?
ghost of miles
Thanks. This collection has been popular on many music forums a few months ago. Hope I didn't double-post it here, Claude... I did a search first and couldn't turn it up. (Unless somebody posted it in the "silly jazz covers" thread--I confess I didn't want to flip through all 58 pages, or however long that one was. )
Claude
I don't know if it was posted here, GOM. I've seen it multiple times. But I browse too many message boards ... Here is the original page, from october last year: http://www.cenedella.com/stone/archives/000302.html
danasgoodstuff
As long as we're (sorta) talking 'bout Orleans, isn't one of shania's hits a dead ringer for "Still the One"? Or does Mutt own the copyright on both of them?
Late
Those covers need captions! Except maybe this one: Priceless. Now, what about worst jazz album covers? I nominate this one: The Penguin Guide refers to the original cover of Paul Bley's Touching as having "one of the most unpleasant covers in the history of recorded music." Who can find this? (Unrelated side note: When will Dusty Groove ever stop referring to albums as "bits"? Maybe they need a taste of Ben Wallace: ) Edited February 24, 2004 by Late

Late
What's wrong with that? Hmmm, I wonder if perhaps Cook & Morton got their copy mixed up with a 70's porn stars Sings the Blues and You Do Too compilation.

brownie
One of the famous covers by Dutch artist Marte Roling! Some of her covers were discussed in this thread http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=6378

Some of her covers were discussed in this thread http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=6378 Yeah, I like those. Especially the Marion Brown. clifford_thornton
I think they're referring to the UK Fontana version of "Touching," which has a silhouette of a woman's hand grasping the word "Touching" on a white background. It's actually kinda nice, I think. The Roling is preferable, however. Anybody ever seen the alternate UK jacket to the "Juba-Lee," retitled "The Visitor"? clifford_thornton
Yup, that's the one I have at home. Classy!
Late
I still don't get it. "One of the most unpleasant covers in the history of recorded music." I thought it would be a picture of a vivisected monkey or something. Or maybe the inside of Nixon's left nostril. The covers that Couw's posted are tame I tell ya! Edit: Ah, they're referring to the Arista/Freedom pressing cover. Couw? Edited February 24, 2004 by Late
ghost of miles
I was never too keen on this one. I guess it was supposed to represent Bud's debilitating mental state, but...
couw
now THAT looks like a vivisected monkey! yech!
couw
Edit: Ah, they're referring to the Arista/Freedom pressing cover. Couw? AFAIK that's the one with the Marte Roling artwerk. Clifford?
clifford_thornton
The Arista-Freedom is the "Copenhagen and Haarlem" twofer, which like most of their packages, has a shitty excuse for a cover. But that's not, 'original,' then, is it? I guess someone at Penguin doesn't dig Marte or the graphic design talents at Fontana. I don't know; I never trust CD guides. Late
I never trust CD guides. Never? Well, I hear you. I was just curious, as Cook & Morton's statement had me conjuring up all sorts of perverse and demented covers. Maybe as a practical joke, someone slipped Bley's LP into a Loni Anderson Sings Wagner jacket. That might be unpleasant.
couw
Loni Anderson Sings Wagner you'll have to post that one yourself. I'm too lazy to search...
alejo
I just picked this one up last weekend. Great music but what were those LP cover designers thinking? Ranks up there with Chick Corea’s smurf-themed Friends album. Edited February 25, 2004 by alejo
clifford_thornton
It's amazing how many folks think that A-Fs are the original issues. This appears to be most often perpetuated by Penguin, AMG et al. Very unfortunate, the amount of misinformation out there.
